Urban Meyer New Favorite NFL Coach To Be Fired

jacksonville jaguarsThe first coach to be fired is one of the most interesting props in all of sports betting. It might seem a bit mean-spirited to newer bettors, considering you are banking on someone losing their employment. However, it’s been a profitable wager for many in the past. Last year, Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien was listed at +1100 to be fired first, higher odds than fellow soon-to-be-hired coaches such as Matt Patricia from the Detroit Lions and New York Jets coach Adam Gase. In college football, USC head coach Clay Helton held on for a couple of weeks before being fired in September but was listed highly at sportsbooks to be fired first an entire year beforehand. Well, it’s looking like there’s a new favorite for the first NFL coach to be fired, and there are a number of interesting reasons why.

Urban Meyer New Favorite For First NFL Coach Fired

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer might have some awkward meetings coming up. The head coach, formerly of Ohio State and Florida, was supposed to use his championship-winning style to turn around an ailing franchise. So far, it has not worked out. The Jaguars are 0-4 so far this year, being outscored 115-74. The Jaguars have also had trouble keeping leads the past few weeks against the Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals. If the team had simply held on, they’d currently be 2-2 on the season. The coach’s off-field behavior has also become a distraction, with a viral video of him at an Ohio bar prompting questions from media and team ownership alike.

All of this has led to Meyer’s numbers to be fired first shifting. Some oddsmakers have Meyer listed as the heavy favorite to pack his bags at -200. Keep in mind that the wording of this particular prop doesn’t just mean firing, as the bet is also covered if the coach leaves their job during the season. This is connected to speculation that not only is Meyer unhappy with his short time in the NFL, the coach is eyeing the open spot at USC.

Odds Were Much Higher Before The Season

While plenty of people were skeptical of the Urban Meyer hiring before the start of the season, they probably didn’t expect him to possibly lose his job first. Back in June, odds were much higher for the new head coach, with him being listed at +5000 on certain books. Needless to say, if you grabbed a ticket on the Jags coach to be out first in the NFL, you might be in for a big payday soon.

The Rest of the Soon-To-Be-Fired Pack

Meyer’s seat is suddenly incredibly hot, but he’s not the only coach that might be quickly unemployed this season. Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy, who saved his job for another week with a win over Detroit, is listed at +200. Meanwhile, Mike Zimmer of the struggling Minnesota Vikings is next on the list at +500. No matter who you have a ticket on, something tells me we’ll have an answer on this prop in the coming weeks.
