Growing up I sincerely thought the rivalry between Broncos & Raiders was one of the signature rivalries in all of sports. The nephew of Mike Shanahan, I remember running around my grandpa’s living room at 5-6 years old, barely cognizant of the concept of football yet absolutely certain in the NECESSITY that the Blue & Orange beat the Silver & Black out there on that green thing.
As I grew older I learned a little more about the backstory. Wikipedia’d the gaps. My Uncle had his first head coaching gig for the Raiders in the mid-’80s in LA. There was a power struggle with Al Davis, a losing season – and his budding head coaching career came to a sudden halt in the middle of his second year.
That didn’t matter as a kid. What mattered was WE won. And we ALWAYS won. It was like watching my favorite Disney movie on VHS every time we played Oakland. At the end of every three-hour grudge match, the evil cronies in black had their heads in their hands, wondering how they let the good guys beguile them again.
Shanahan won 21 of 28 games against the Raiders during his tenure as Broncos HC. That record included winning 10 of his first 11 against his former employers.
It’s not too hard of a stretch to paint the “Oakland Raiders” as the bad guys. They have a menacing pirate as their shield
Similarly, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb to describe the Washington Racial-slurs as evil. Their PR man Tony Wyllie patrols the Landover facility like Darth Vader eyes the floor of the Death Star. Eager to please his master – Dan Snyder, “The Emperor”, who is seldom spoken of directly in the building & and when necessary referred to only as “D.S.”
When my cousin, San Francisco’s 49ers Head Coach, Kyle Shanahan was asked what his favorite part of coaching in DC was, he didn’t have much to say negatively – or at all.

What was the best part of working in Washington?
“Being able to work with my dad & be around some other good coaches.”
What was the worst part?
Speak softly and beat the pulp out of your former employer seems to be strategy among the elite in the NFL coaching ranks.
Andy Reid 2-0 against the Eagles, 2-0 ATS
Belichick 6-1 against the Browns, 4-2 ATS
Belichick 30-11 against the Jets, 21-19-1 ATS
Kyle Shanahan against the Redskins? 0-1, 1-0 ATS, losing in Week 6 of his first season with the 49ers.
Simple handicap ultimately: I have the 49ers at least 10 points better than Washington. Additionally, I have Washington’s HFA as close to 0 at this point – given how furious the fanbase is with their organization & owner. If the revenge factor is worth a point or more, I think we have great value here on the 49ers to cruise.
3-Team, 6.5-Point Teaser (+150): Chargers +8.5 @ Titans (from +2), Saints +10 @ Bears (from +3.5), 49ers -2.5 @ Redskins (from -9) – .5 Units
The Chargers continue to have the worst HFA in the NFL, losing 9 out of their last 10 home games against the spread. However, this home futility has helped them remain a cheap commodity given their relatively strong performance on the road. Over the last 2 years under Anthony Lynn, LA has gone 13-5-2 ATS on the road. Some of their injured players, such as Hunter Henry, continue to work their way back into the fold. The Chargers still have one of the most overall talented rosters in the league. With a low total here, I love for the Chargers to keep it close or win.
The Saints are my favorite play of the week as discussed here. Another low Total matched a with live road dog makes this great a teaser play.
