Army takes on Tulane down in New Orleans for a matchup featuring on ESPN+. Army is 6-1 on the season but has a mediocre schedule with one true test against Cincinnati. Tulane is 4-4 on the year but has been through a tough part of the AAC already. This makes for an interesting matchup with a .500 team favored against a 6-1 team.

However, the numbers say the wrong team is favored in this Saturday’s matchup.

When breaking down the FEI ratings, Army ranks 47th (51st offense & 54th defense) in the country, and Tulane ranks 74th (72nd offense & 74th defense). FEI only tracks games that are FBS vs. FBS matchups. Although Army has played three FCS schools in October, FEI has been tracking Army’s data against FBS opponents, and they are still better than Tulane.

The Black Knight’s triple option is tough to defend, no matter how good the defense is. Although Tulane’s defense has a better success rate than Army’s offense, the Black Knight’s do have an edge in the trenches (huge for the triple option) along with being able to finish drives. Army also has a higher PPA than Tulane, showing they can score points based on how the offense has performed.

Tulane’s offense is going to have issues against the Army defense. The Green Wave offense is not bad by any stretch, ranking in the top-45 in success rate. However, Army’s defense ranks 20th in success rate and is also top-10 and limiting the offense to finish drives. Army will also have an edge with its defensive line, being able to create push against Tulane.

The wrong team is favored in this matchup. It could be an overreaction to Army’s schedule, but they are the better team on Saturday.

I fell in love with handicapping right away. Sports betting is a lot more enjoyable when going through advanced data to find an edge on a Vegas line. Situational plays is a focus of mine and study stats and data analytics to go along with certain situations to make myself a more well rounded capper. College football and college basketball are my favorite to bet.
