William Hill Week 8 Best Colts Bet
The Indianapolis Colts (4-2) head to Detroit to take on the Lions (3-3) this Sunday. The Colts are coming off of a bye week. The week prior, they took down the Cincinnati Bengals 31-27. The Lions enter this contest on a two-game winning streak after making an amazing comeback to take down the Atlanta Falcons 23-22.
Through the first four weeks of the season, the Colts looked like they had the best defense in the NFL. Then, the Colts defense had two rough back-to-back weeks when they gave up 32 points to the Cleveland Browns and then 27 to the Bengals. Despite those weeks, the Colts are still first in the league in yards allowed per game, second against the pass, third against the rush, and fourth in points allowed.
Philip Rivers has been a bit of an offensive liability for the Colts this season. While the Colts are 10th in the league in passing, Rivers has just seven touchdowns to go with six interceptions. To make matters worse, the Colts have the 28th-ranked rushing offense. For the Colts, the defense is there to make a run but the offense needs to improve dramatically if they want to take on the juggernauts of the league.
Detroit started the season off 1-3 and it appeared the Lions were in for yet another losing season. However, they managed to win their last two games to get back to .500 and keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Aside from their blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers (42-21) and their blowout win against the Jacksonville Jaguars (34-16), the rest of their games have all been one-possession games.
Matthew Stafford is putting together another big statistical season that has him throwing 10 touchdowns to go with four interceptions. However, the Lions are just 20th in the league in passing offense and only 18th in rushing. Like the Colts, their offense has been stagnant at times and cost them games. Unlike the Colts, the Lions defense is not good enough to help them win games. The Lions rank 21st in total yards allowed, 20th against the pass, 26th against the rush, and 20th in points allowed per game.
Philip Rivers needs to have a good game this weekend and he should be able to do so against a very young Lions’ secondary. This is the type of team that the Colts should also be able to run the ball against. Indianapolis can’t sleep on the Lions’ offense because while they can be dull at times, they can also go on quick scoring bursts as well. This is the type of game that lets us know if the Colts actually are a contender or a pretender this season. If Indianapolis’s offense can’t click in this game, there is no hope for them as the season progresses and they play better teams. Have faith in the Colts to play one of their best games of the year and get the cover.
