William Hill Sportsbook at Capital One Arena Debuts

Last Friday, the William Hill Sportsbook at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. opened for business at 4:00 PM local time. The launch of the sportsbook brings a sense of relief for sports bettors in the area, as the one using the D.C. Lottery’s mobile app is not happy with the results.

The William Hill Sportsbook is the first one in the U.S. at a sporting arena or stadium as they will run seven betting windows and nine kiosks. Capital One Arena is home to the Washington Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics.

The box office is currently the sportsbook until it is up and running. They will to the normal area when it’s done. This is the first retail sportsbook in D.C. when it launched in May this year. Now, people in the area have a legit sportsbook to go too.

William Hill received their Class A operation license on Friday. The license will run for five years and requires the District to collect a 10 percent tax on revenue. With a full slate of sports happening over the weekend, the book quickly opened that afternoon.

In May 2018, the Supreme Court made a ruling that forcefully struck down the decades-long federal ban on commercial sports betting. Later that year, the D.C. Council approved, and Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a bill that allowed for legalized sports gambling in the District, despite concerns of corruption and where precisely the betting revenue was going to go.

It took nearly 18 months for legal sports betting to come to the District.

People using Gamebet DC is not happy with how the app is working. Lines are juiced up and there seems to be no feeling of an edge with their customers.

There have been reports of the app offering odds of -115 to -118 juice on games that would usually be -110 odds instead. None of the NASCAR drives sat in plus money except for two. Can you imagine a 35 person race only has two people in plus money to win it all? that i absolutely mind-boggling.

The added juice from -110 to -115 may not have a huge impact on recreational bettors or small-time bettors. However, experienced bettors will feel the difference when frequently betting -115 lines instead of -110.

The D.C. Lottery is using its sports betting system to pump money back into the local economy. The goal of the juiced lines is to raise revenue for the city instead of enriching sports bettors. The Lottery does not shy away from this either.

What William Hill Brings

William Hill brings a reputable sportsbook into the D.C. area. After a ton of issues with GamebetDC, William Hill will give sports bettors competitive lines compared to GamebetDC. Another sportsbook should help generate more revenue for the D.C. area as sports bettors will want to use William Hill instead.

The timing of their launch is also perfect. The NBA, NHL, and MLB are all in action, with games going on every day. William Hill should see a successful first-month of sports betting even as they only have a retail location set up.

The sportsbooks are allowed to open as they would be considered phase two of the reopen D.C. plan. The opening of Capital One Arena will let sports bettors to get their action along with helping William Hill out in the early stages of entering a new market.

I fell in love with handicapping right away. Sports betting is a lot more enjoyable when going through advanced data to find an edge on a Vegas line. Situational plays is a focus of mine and study stats and data analytics to go along with certain situations to make myself a more well rounded capper. College football and college basketball are my favorite to bet.
