In his rookie year, there’s going to be high hopes and anticipation for what D.K. Metcalf can bring to Seattle. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson stated that “I think he’s a superstar. I think he’s going to be able to do all the things he wants to do. There’s nothing he can’t do.” That’s certainly high praise from a Super Bowl winning QB who believes Metcalf will have both the physical attributes and knowledge needed to succeed in the NFL.
The 2018, the Seattle Seahawks were the 6th overall offense last year, ranking 27th in passing yards and 5th in passing TDs. The team was led by Tyler Lockett and Doug Balwin through the latter has now retired. D.K. Metcalf was drafted with the 32nd overall pick in this year’s draft as Seattle will look to replace their 8 year veteran. He along with Lockett will help lead the Seahawks’ 3 wide receiver sets.

Upside
It’s always hard to predict rookies and see how they can adapt their game from the collegiate level to the NFL. In only seven starts last season, he was good for 569 passing yards and 5 TDs. Throughout his career at Ole Miss, Metcalf has struggled with injuries and will have to stay on the field to hold any value this year. He has an interesting mix of height and speed which could help him develop into a deep threat for quarterback Russell Wilson. He’s projected to 650 receiving yards for 7 TDs, roughly the same stats Baldwin got last year.
Floor
If injuries linger and Metcalf doesn’t develop into the WR2 the Seahawks had hoped, he might not be as good as hoped. Seattle has a bunch of weapons at RB and TE so Metcalf might become forgotten if he doesn’t produce. Nevertheless, the Seahawks will give their second round pick a chance to impress them. While we might not know what to expect from Metcalf, his floor should stand somewhere close to 550 receiving yards and 5 TDs, slightly worse than Baldwin.
What to Expect
Metcalf is currently ranked as the 35th wide receiver off the board and holds an auction value of $9. He’s currently projected to have 8th round draft value. Metcalf is the typical rookie receiver who offers a good amount of talent on a winning team. While his frame is large enough to get around defenders, Metcalf did have some problems with dropped passes that will need some work.
With 8th round talent, there’s potential to get a good WR3 with WR2 ceiling. At the same time, you could also snag more solid receivers in Corey Davis, Golden Tate, and Larry Fitzgerald in a round later. The $9 price tag is very reasonable given the potential of reaching the WR2 tier. However, I’d rather target Allen Robinson ($12), Alshon Jeffrey ($9), and Marquise Goodwin ($7) who should offer similar production. Metcalf has potential and is likely worth a flier on draft day. He makes for a high upside pick that could either become Russell Wilson’s #1 target or become overshadowed by Tyler Lockett and Nick Vannett in the passing game.
While we’re not sure what to expect from Metcalf in year one, his collegiate stats last year look very similar to those of Baldwin last year. Look for a 650 receiving yard season with 6 TDs. He should make a good compliment on the other side of Lockett as he looks to make a good first impression in year one.
