Josh McCown recently went on ESPN and had Julian Edelman as his 4th best receiver entering the year. While many people strongly disagreed with this assessment, Edelman has been one of the most consistent receivers in recent memory that can be had at a bargain.

En route to yet another Super Bowl Championship, the New England Patriots were one of the best offensive units in football. They ranked 4th overall, 8th in passing yards, and 11th in passing TDs. Led by Hall of Fame bound QB, Tom Brady, the Patriot receivers are in line for yet another productive year in fantasy. They ran a 3 receiver scheme and had great production from wide receivers Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon and tight end, Rob Gronkowski.

Upside

With Gronkowski now enjoying retirement, the Patriots will lean on Julian Edelman, Demaryius Thomas, and possibly Josh Gordon, depending on his situation with the NFL. Obviously, a situation with only the two former receivers favors Edelman as he would receive more targets and points for fantasy owners. He led the team last year with 74 receptions and 850 receiving yards. His ceiling won’t be that high and he’s unlikely to have many games where he goes crazy in points. Instead, Edelman is a safe pick that could reach 1,000 receiving yards and 10 TDs under the right circumstances.

Floor

As a very reliable receiver, the only fear is that Edelman will not doing enough. Tom Brady has a bunch of weapons in his arsenal and Edelman might not be on the receiving end of targets. Brady may prefer newcomer Thomas as his slot receiver instead of his longtime friend in Edelman. Nevertheless, he’s a consistent player that at the very least, will warrant 700 yards and 5 TDs.

What to Expect

New England PatriotsEdelman is currently ranked as the 15th wide receiver off the board and holds an auction value of $14. He’s currently projected to have 4th round draft value. While nothing exciting, Edelman is a safe pick in the 4th round and could be a very servicable WR2. He lacks the ability to gain enough yards and might not have enough production in the TD department to be that good. His auction value of $14 is fair for a WR2 valuation but his ADP in the 4th round seems a bit high.

If you had the opportunity to select him in the 4th round as your WR1, I’d certainly do so. However, if you plan to use Edelman as a WR2 or even 3, I might be willing to wait another round or two and be a bit more risky. Whatever you round or monetary valuation is on him, Edelman provides decent value with his floor being fairly similar to his ceiling.

Expect Edelman to be his usual self this year. We project him to get more receptions in the absence of Gronkowski and 900 receiving yards. The touchdown total will be hard to guess as New England may be willing to run the ball more in an effort to save Brady’s arm for another deep playoff run. Whatever the case may be, Edelman shouldn’t have a problem getting at least the same stats as last year if not better.
