Despite having an absolute disaster of a season, there was a couple silver linings for the Green Bay Packers. That was the play of rookie wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Despite being drafted in the 5th round, Valdes-Scantling managed to become an impact player for the Packers. With a new offensive system supposedly geared towards receivers like him, there’s hope he can become a worthy number two receiver to Davante Adams.

Upside
Valdes-Scantling will have the benefit of catching passes from arguably the most talented quarterback ever in Aaron Rodgers. From a football perspective, you’d be hard pressed to find a young receiver as lucky. If Matt Lafleur’s new system ends up being half as innovative and unique as the Rams, the Packers offense has a chance to once again become one of the league’s most lethal. If all the offseason changes work as intended, Valdes-Scantling could break out with a 1000 yard, 6 touchdown season.
Floor
Valdes-Scantling will get a much bigger role but how will he react to it? A larger role generally means more attention defensively and more pressure, external and internal. Matt Lafleur’s system will probably be an upgrade, but it remains to be seen how much. His stint with the Titans as their offensive coordinator was fairly mediocre, and though there’s more talent with the Packers, that still doesn’t guarantee anything. If Rodgers and his new coach end up having a problem with each other and create another situation like last year, the Packers offense could fall apart quickly. Valdes-Scantling is a promising young player but there’s a lot of external factors that might affect his season that are out of his control. If the Packers face another horrible season like last year’s, Valdes-Scantling could end up busting, with just 500 yards and 2 touchdowns.
What to Expect
Valdez-Scantling is currently ranked as the 39th best receiver with an auction value of $6. He’s expected to be drafted in the 11th round. Both his draft position and his price are relatively solid bargains. He’d make a quality flex receiver and he might have the potential to be a WR3 or even 2. It wouldn’t be the first time Aaron Rodgers turned a relatively unknown receiver into a stud. Pick him up at his draft position if you’re lacking in receiver depth.
Valdez-Scantling is a pretty big bodied receiver at 6’4, and pairs well with Davante Adams. He has pretty similar dimensions to Jordy Nelson, which should help make his transition into the Packer’s WR2 easier. I anticipate there will be some early growing pains with Matt Lafleur’s new system, but it will work out for the better in the end. I expect Valdes-Scantling to produce something along the lines of 800 yards and 5 touchdowns.
