NFL Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 2

Week 1 is in the books, and it had some carnage to go with it. Tyreek Hill is out for at least a few weeks, while we also wait the news on Tevin Coleman, Joe Mixon, and Mike Williams. Some names that may not have been drafted, but Nick Foles and Devin Funchess both left this week’s games with what appears to be serious injuries. Some popular pickups will be made this week based off performance bias. Marquise Brown will be one of them, and DJ Chark will be the other. However, there are some crucial guys to note that made a jump in snaps and touches this week.

Raheem Mostert – RB – San Francisco 49ers

Average Ownership: 1%

The injury bug has been brutal for the 49ers this season, especially at running back. Jerick McKinnon struggled to get back healthy, and is currently on IR. Tevin Coleman left Week 1’s game against the Bucs, and it looks like he is going to miss some time. Matt Breida is a pick up option, but in deeper and more knowledgeable leagues, he is already on a team. However, Raheem Mostert has some stand alone value. He rushed for 40 yards on nine attempts, and had one target int he passing game as well. He gets a friendly matchup against the Bengals this upcoming week, and should be in line for 10-15 touches.

Giovani Bernard – RB – Cincinnati Bengals

Average Ownership: 30%

Joe Mixon’s Week 1 departure sets up potential for Giovani Bernard to get solid work for the Bengals. Bernard has been a PPR viable back at points in his career, and we have seen him also thrive when called upon due to injuries. The plus side is that he offers up upside in PPR leagues, and he saw three targets against Seattle, which went for 42 yards. We will need to monitor Mixon’s status for this week, but keep Bernard on your watch if Mixon is set to miss any sort of time. He will get a San Francisco defense this week that gave up plenty of production to a pedestrian Buccaneers backfield.

Malcolm Brown – RB – Los Angeles Rams

Average Ownership: 9%

Todd Gurley’s backup was going to be a sought after pick, but after Week 1, we have realized that it is not going to be Darrell Henderson like we all thought. While this could change, it was Malcolm Brown who had a solid usage. Brown also received two carries within the five yard line, which he converted. His standalone value is not going to produce Week 1 type numbers, but he clearly is the handcuff to own at this point. He had 11 rushing attempts, while Gurly had 14. The workload seems to be spread out early on, which isn’t a big surprise.

John Brown – WR – Buffalo Bills

Average Ownership: 37%

John Brown was a late round flyer for some, but for the most part he is available in your leagues. The Bills are not a notable passing attack, but after what Robert Foster did late last season, and Brown’s skillset coming into this season, he was expected to produce in a big way. Week 1, Brown saw ten targets, catching seven of them for 123 yards and a touchdown. Brown’s targets are going to be there on a weekly basis, and should be more than a boom or bust home run threat with this type of volume. The other wideout named Brown, Marquise Brown, is also a a top waiver pickup, and his ownership will jump through the roof.

Terry McLaurin – WR – Washington Redskins

Average Ownership: 8%

Another late round dart throw in deeper leagues was Terry McLaurin. His preseason workload indicated that he was going to be an impact player right away. Like Brown in Buffalo, we wrote off the Redskins passing attack. Case Keenum has supported plenty of fantasy wideouts in his career, so there is some value in Washington. He saw seven targets, catching five of them for 125 yards and a score. The 70-yard touchdown was a bulk of the fantasy points, and he nearly had a second on a ball that was over thrown. McLaurin is a must add for those who are in need of WR or even WR depth.

T.J. Hockenson – TE – Detroit Lions

Average Ownership: 30%

Year one tight ends usually do not have a great fantasy trajectory, but T.J. Hockenson was someone I believed could beat that. He was one of my favorite sleepers, and Week 1 was a great start to his career. The volume was there, even though he shared snaps with Jesse James. He saw nine targets, catching six of them for 131 yards and a touchdown. Most of this production was while leading, which was a positive on a team that wanted to be run heavy. Hockenson is going to be highly sought after on the waiver wire, and he is someone worth picking up to be even a weekly starter moving forward.
