This week we finally saw a break in the Patriots’ defense. The Ravens were able to score 37 points which are, by far, the most points they have allowed in a single game this season. The Texans took care of the Jaguars in London this week, holding them to just 3 total points. Looking at past weeks and at upcoming matchups, I will be going through my top waiver wire picks at defense this week. The defenses that I pick from are owned in less than 60% of leagues.
Team | Opponent | % Owned |
---|---|---|
Baltimore Ravens | Cincannti Bengals | 33.6 |
Indianapolis Colts | Miami Dolphins | 37.4 |
New York Giants | New York Jets | 2.6 |
Detroit Lions | Chicago Bears | 10.1 |
Kansas City Chiefs | Tennessee Titans | 13.6 |
New York Jets | New York Giants | 20.8 |
Baltimore Ravens
Opponent: Cincinnati Bengals
Own %: 33.6
The Ravens are coming off a big win against the Patriots. They knocked down one of the only undefeated teams in dramatic fashion. The defense was able to intercept Tom Brady once and recover a fumble for a touchdown, making it back to back weeks with a defensive touchdown for the Ravens. Their next game against the Bengals shouldn’t have many differences. The Bengals have been among the worst. Their 15.5 points per game are fourth-worst in the NFL. If the Ravens can handle Tom Brady and Russell Wilson, Andy Dalton shouldn’t be a problem.
Indianapolis Colts
Opponent: Miami Dolphins
Own %: 37.4
The Colts had a rough time last week against the Steelers. They were not able to guard Jaylen Samuels out of the backfield, but despite that, they were able to put up some points from their safety, interception, and fumble recovery. The Dolphins will be a much easier team to cover. Now that they traded Kenyan Drake, they don’t have a solid option in the backfield. The main focus will be covering Preston Williams and DeVante Parker who came to life last week. Since the Dolphins virtually have no run game, this shouldn’t be a problem for the Colts.
New York Giants
Opponent: New York Jets
Own %: 2.6
The Giants face the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, so that game will be a big telling factor in whether the Giants are a good pickup or not but based on their last few games, they have been solid. They had a defensive touchdown in two of their last three games. They face the second-worst offense in the NFL in Week 10 to give them an extra boost. The Jets offense has performed very similarly to the Redskins this season who the Giants handled earlier this season, allowing just 3 points with 4 turnovers and a touchdown. I expect the same type of game.
Detroit Lions
Opponent: Chicago Bears
Own %: 10.1
The Lions struggled defensively against the Raiders last week in which the only the points they received were from a sack. Other than two underperforming weeks, they have been a solid option because of their forced turnovers. The Bears have gone through a bunch of offensive struggles this year and it didn’t end last week. They had just 187 yards of total offense against the Eagles who have not been a very good defense. The Lions can take advantage of their recent problem and put up some good numbers this week.
Kansas City Chiefs
Opponent: Tennessee Titans
Own %: 13.6
The Chiefs have totally revamped their defense from last year. Just three weeks ago, they held the Broncos to 6 points while getting a fumble recovery for a touchdown and nine sacks. The Titans have been one of the least productive offenses in the league with 18.7 points per game. They’ve gotten to the point where they’ve changed quarterbacks. Ryan Tannehill has been a lot better than Marcus Mariota but still threw two interceptions last week to the Panthers. The Chiefs should be able to be a turnover machine this week.
New York Jets
Opponent: New York Giants
Own %: 20.8
The Jets had a great matchup last week and face another one this week. They managed four sacks and a safety against the Dolphins. This week they face their inter-city rivals, the Giants. The Giants face the Cowboys in Monday Night Football against the Cowboys. That will be a good sign as to what their offense will be able to do. They have averaged just 19.8 points per game which is below the NFL average. The Jets aren’t the best option but could do a job if they’re your only option left.
