Week 10 is a huge bye week; the Broncos, Texans, Jaguars, Patriots, Eagles, and Redskins are all on bye this week, leaving a ton of starting running backs out for the week. If you’re looking for a running back to pick up to fill a hole created by the bye week, here’s some of the top waiver wire pickups heading into week 10. I also included some speculative picks that might turn out to be great investments for the future of your roster.
Name | Team | Opponent | FAAB | Own % |
---|---|---|---|---|
Devin Singletary | Bills | Browns | 7 | 63% |
Jaylen Samuels | Steelers | Rams | 10 | 49% |
Ronald Jones II | Buccaneers | Cardinals | 8 | 39% |
J.D. McKissic | Lions | Bears | 4 | 16% |
Rex Burkhead | Patriots | BYE | 5 | 12% |
Jay Ajayi | N/A | N/A | 6 | 1% |
Trey Edmunds | Steelers | Rams | 8 | 4% |
Devin Singletary
Singletary had a huge game against the Redskins, going 95 yards and scoring a touchdown off of 20 carries, and going 45 yards on 3 receptions. That’s a 23 point performance in PPR leagues. 23 points is a huge day for a player who is owned in just 63% of leagues. Singletary has a great matchup in week 10 against a Browns defense that allows an average of 141.2 rushing yards per game, the third most in the league. The week after, the Bills play the Dolphins, who allow an average of 150.8 rushing yards per game. Singletary is looking like a great pickup for these next couple of weeks.
Jaylen Samuels
Jaylen Samuels didn’t put up the most incredible performance on the ground, going 10 yards on 8 carries. However, it doesn’t seem like that was the Steelers’ plan for Samuels. Samuels made his mark through the air, going 73 yards off of 13 receptions. James Conner is questionable for week 10 with a shoulder injury, which means it’s possible Samuels will be getting a lot of targets against the Rams in week 10.
Ronald Jones II
Ronald Jones has been on and off of these lists, but he’s back this week after a big game in week 9. He had 18 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown, plus 15 yards off of two receptions. The Tampa Bay backfield has been a bit of an unpredictable one this season, with Barber sometimes getting more carries than Jones. However, Jones has been trending up in carries over the past couple of weeks and last week had 18 carries, huge compared to Barber’s four. The Buccaneers have a good matchup against the Cardinals, who have allowed the 10th most fantasy points for opposing running backs this season. Jones is a great pickup for this week as it seems the Buccaneers have decided to trust him with large amounts of carries.
J.D. McKissic
McKissic had a solid performance for the Lions in week 9. He had 4 carries for 32 yards, and three receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown. That’s a 16.2 point performance in PPR leagues, great for a player owned in less than 20% of leagues. Kerryon Johnson is on IR, so McKissic is definitely going to get a few more games in this season. McKissic has shown he can be a good pickup, and should be considered as he’s probably available in your league.
Rex Burkhead
Burkhead has been getting pretty limited carries due to a foot injury he sustained in week 4. In week 9, he had 4 carries for 18 yards. He has 134 yards and a touchdown on the year despite being out and limited for a while due to his injury. The Patriots have a bye for week 10, which is perfect for Burkhead to rest up and get as close to 100% as he can. I’m expecting him to play a bigger part in the Patriots offense in week 11, especially after having the bye to recover. The Patriots are playing the Eagles coming off of their bye, which isn’t the easiest matchup on the ground, but have an easier schedule in the last couple weeks of the season. I think Burkhead would be a good “investment pickup” if you have the room on your roster, as he plays a big part in the Patriots offense when he’s fully healthy.
Jay Ajayi
Ajayi is another speculative pick. He’s finally returned from an ACL tear and has been working out for the Lions as of late. The Lions have been pretty needy on the ground, especially with Kerryon Johnson out. Ajayi is a great back and could prove a huge boost to their offense. If he’s added by the Lions, he’ll likely jump straight up to being their number one back. The Lions have a couple of tough running matchups in their future, playing the Cowboys once and the Bears twice within the next four weeks. However, if Ajayi is added, I’m predicting he’s going to get a lot of chances. The Bears and Cowboys have both allowed big rushing games for opposing backs, so Ajayi has a chance to make a big splash upon his return. Again, this is a speculative pick which might be a good idea if you have room on your roster, as it’s not guaranteed the Lions will pick him up.
Trey Edmunds
While Jaylen Samuels seemed to have picked up the receiving slack left behind by James Conner, Edmunds picked up his slack on the ground. Edmunds carried the ball 12 times for 73 yards on Sunday against a middling Colts rushing defense. Over the next 5 weeks, the Steelers have four strong matchups for their rushing game, playing the Browns twice, the Bengals, and the Cardinals. It’s yet to be seen when Conner will return, so it’s hard to predict how many of these games Edmunds will actually get to play in. However, at 4% ownership he’s a good back to look out for coming into these matchups. While his week 10 matchup against the Rams is going to be more challenging, he’s rewarded with four easier ones afterward.
