A couple of backs that we knew had potential, like Duke Johnson and Derrius Guice, had breakout games this week making them targets for the waiver wire. A couple of injuries have put more priority on certain running backs like Darwin Thompson as well. Here’s my suggestions for backs to pick up off the waiver wire for week 14.
Player | Team | Opponent | FAAB | % Ownership |
---|---|---|---|---|
Duke Johnson | Texans | Broncos | $5 | 60% |
Derrius Guice | Redskins | Packers | $9 | 52% |
Raheem Mostert | 49ers | Saints | $6 | 12% |
Nyheim Hines | Colts | Buccaneers | $8 | 29% |
Peyton Barber | Buccaneers | Colts | $4 | 36% |
Benny Snell Jr. | Steelers | Cardinals | $6 | 17% |
Darwin Thompson | Chiefs | Patriots | $3 | 5% |
Duke Johnson
Duke Johnson played a big part in the Texans upset win over the Patriots on Sunday night. He had 9 carries for 36 yards and 5 receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown, a total 20 points in PPR leagues. This was his biggest game of the season, but he’s come close before with 19.1 points in week 9 at Jacksonville. He’s only had four games over 10 fantasy points, but I think the Texans might give him a bigger role after his clutch performance against a tough Patriots defense. The Texans are up against the Broncos this week whose rush defense is ranked in the bottom half of the league. If Johnson has a bigger role this week, which I suspect he may, he’ll be rushing against a much easier defense than the Patriots.
Derrius Guice
Guice had a huge game against Carolina, putting up 27.7 points in PPR leagues. He had 10 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns, along with 2 receptions for 8 yards. The Redskins seem to be splitting his carries almost evenly with Adrian Peterson, who had 3 more than Guice on Sunday. However, with Guice’s huge performance on Sunday, I think we might see a shift in the running priority for the Redskins. They’re up against the Packers who allow 123.0 rushing yards per game on average, the 8th most in the league. I think Guice has the potential for another big game if the Redskins decide to give him more carries.
Raheem Mostert
Mostert had 19 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown, as well as 2 receptions for 8 yards on Sunday against a tough Ravens defense. Mostert’s only had 3 games above 6 points in PPR leagues this season, as he’s their third option at running back. However, he has had another 20+ game against Cincinnati, so he definitely has big game potential when he’s featured. Breida was out for their matchup against the Ravens, which explains Mostert’s prominence in this game. The 49ers are expecting Breida to be back for their matchup against the Saints this week, so I don’t think Mostert will have as big of a game. However, he might be featured more prominently due to his big game and he might be good to have later in the season for when teams potentially start resting their starters to prepare for the playoffs.

Nyheim Hines
Hines doesn’t get a ton of carries, but he makes up for it by getting points in the catching game, making him especially valuable in PPR leagues. On Sunday against the Titans he had 4 carries for 22 yards and a touchdown, plus 2 receptions for a total of 18 yards. This netted him a total 12 points in PPR leagues, an ok performance for an RB3 or FLEX position. He’s proven he can be efficient with the low amount of chances he gets. The Colts are up against the Buccaneers this week, who on average allow the 2nd most yards through the air per game. I think Hines’ position in the Colts’ passing game makes him a pretty viable option for their matchup against a weaker Buccaneers secondary.
Peyton Barber
Barber led the backfield for the Buccaneers on Sunday when Arians took Ronald Jones out due to him missing a blitz pickup. Barber went on to have 17 carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns, an 18.4 point performance in PPR leagues. Barber hasn’t been the most lucrative fantasy back this season with only 4 games above 10 points, but the fact that the Buccaneers relied on him for those two touchdowns makes him a potential high-scorer. The Buccaneers are matched up against the Colts this week, who just allowed Derrick Henry to rush for 149 yards. I don’t think Barber would be able to put up numbers that high, but he might be able to do some damage and is worth consideration for Sunday.
Benny Snell Jr.
Snell had a pretty solid game against the Browns this week. He took 16 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown and had a reception for 4 yards to bring his point total to 13.7 in PPR leagues. Snell has been their back over the past two weeks while the Steelers try to fill the hole that Conner left behind. Conner might be back for week 14, but I think that even if he is they’ll want to ease him in, so he might be splitting carries with Snell. The Steelers are up against the Cardinals this week, who allow the 9th most rushing yards per game on average. Snell has the potential for another big game, and even if Conner returns this week he could still see a fair amount of carries.
Darwin Thompson
Both of the Williams are out for the Chiefs. Darrell Williams has a hamstring injury, and Damien Williams has a rib injury. Both of them are questionable for week 14, which leaves LeSean McCoy and Darwin Thompson in the backfield for the Chiefs. Thompson had 11 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown netting him 10.4 points in PPR leagues. He double the amount of carries that McCoy got, which makes him a promising fantasy option for week 14. The Chiefs are a powerful offense and with a more prominent role Thompson could have some big games. If both Darrell Williams and Damien Williams are out for the Chiefs next matchup, I’d look out for Thompson on the waiver wire. They have a tough matchup against the Patriots who have been tough to run against, but Duke Johnson (a running back for the Texans) put up 20 fantasy points against them this week due to his high reception rate. If the same happens for Thompson, he could have another double digit performance.
