Week 17 Studs
Christian McCaffrey is only 67 yards from a 1,000/1,000 season, and will have a tough on the ground matchup against the Saints, but should have dominance through the air as usual. On the flip side of that game, Alvin Kamara finally broke the touchdown draught against Tennessee, and is in another great spot to end the year. Carolina is allowing the most fantasy points per game to opposing running backs, and they have allowed a whopping 25 rushing touchdowns. Kamara is in for a big week again. We will have to wait on Derrick Henry, but if he is a go, Houston has allowed the 10th most fantasy points per game to opposing running backs. However we will talk a bit more about him below. Ezekiel Elliott can end the season strong against the Redskins, who have allowed the 4th most fantasy points per game to running backs. Aaron Jones is coming off a monster week and is looking for even more touchdowns against a bad Detroit defense. The Lions have allowed the third most fantasy points per game to opposing running backs this season and 13 rushing touchdowns.
Running Back Injury Outlook
Dalvin Cook’s injury did not do anyone any good. Mike Boone posted a dud, although Minnesota looked to have zero game play for the Packers defense. Cook and Mattison will be questionable again heading into Week 17, which puts us in another tough situation where Boone and Abdullah both see touches and now in more of a below average spot.
Derrick Henry should suit up this week after what was said to be a meaningless game when it came to playoff implications. The Titans need a win to lock things up for the wild card. Now if Henry can’t go this week again, Dion Lewis played 43 snaps and had 16 touches total against the Saints, which is a tougher run defense. Dalyn Dawkins saw nine touches behind Lewis.
Jordan Howard is returning this week, which might cut into Miles Sanders workload just a bit. Sanders had a strong few weeks filling in as a featured back, but this should go back to a timeshare that leans 60/40 going more towards Sanders.
James Conner left late last week, and overall he continues to miss time or bow out of games due to injury. I wouldn’t trust his health in Week 17, and his backups of Benny Snell and Jaylen Samuels do not offer up any hope of being able to thrive in this offense. Snell had gotten more work before Conner came back where Samuels only offered a glimpse of upside in the passing game.

Middling Backs With Upside
Marlon Mack will walk into another premium matchup against the Jaguars, who rank 31st in DVOA against the run, and are allowing the second most fantasy points per game. Mack came through in a strong week against the Panthers who are the worst defense in the league against the run. Devin Singletary continues to see a monster workload, and will get the Jets this week at home. While the Jets are a tough run defense, Singletary will see positive game script and 18+ touches. Oakland has allowed the 12th most fantasy points per game to running backs this season, and Phillip Lindsay makes a repeat appearance here coming off a strong week against Detroit. Lindsay is just short of 1,000 rushing yards this season, and should there this week. Kenyan Drake continues to play well, and the Rams rank 15th in fantasy points allowed to running backs and have allowed the 8th most fantasy points over the last five weeks.
Tough Week 17 Fantasy Matchups
Devonta Freeman will take on the Buccaneers this week, which is a tough spot for opposing running backs. They are the only team to not allow over 1,000 yards on the ground, and unless Atlanta runs for 180 yards in Week 17, they won’t. Freeman still has some value in the passing game, but not much success should be had on the ground. Denver is a tough matchup for whomever starts for Oakland, but volume ultimately carries them there. David Montgomery will face the Vikings run defense, who struggled against Green Bay, but overall have limited opposing backs this season. Some committees in tough spots to avoid are Seattle, Miami, and Pittsburgh. Between the injuries and matchups, I will fade the running backs in those spots.
