Week 5 TE Rankings PPR: Tight End Fantasy Stats & Projections

We saw some big performances out of some new names this week. Some we should keep a close eye on and some we should maybe pass up and wait another week to watch their production. Matchup and past performance are the main indicators of who you should be playing this week. Here is a list of the top tight ends going into Week 5 based on those indicators.

Week 5 TE Rankings

New Names

Gerald Everett has been the top tight end for the Rams but hadn’t received much action from Goff who throws a lot. In fact, the Rams ran the highest percentage of pass plays in their last game of all NFL teams that week. This may be where Everett’s increased action came from, but he is a player to watch moving forward. Last week he had a season-high 5 receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. The Rams are stacked with top tier receivers with Kupp, Woods, and Cooks, but Everett has the opportunity to sneak in there and be another problem for defenses. Ricky Seals-Jones also had quite the week this week with increased targets. While he only had 3 receptions, he managed to turn those into 82 yards with a touchdown. With David Njoku out for a while still, Seals-Jones has become the top tight end target for Baker Mayfield. It is hard to be full in on Seals-Jones already after just one game, but next week should be a good indication of how much the Browns plan to use him going forward. The Browns face the 49ers this week who have allowed the 7th least amount of fantasy points to tight ends this season, so I wouldn’t expect too much out of him. Give him some time to fully convince fantasy owners that he is solid option.

Called It

Last week, I was expressing a lot of hype towards Seahawks’ tight end, Will Dissly, and he pulled through this past week. He showed that he is truly a top tight end in the league as he recorded 7 receptions for 57 yards and another touchdown. Dissly is Russell Wilson’s favorite red-zone target which has led to four touchdowns on the season. The Rams are a tougher matchup this week but this should be another big week where he is a must-start in every league. It’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that he is owned in only 67.4% of leagues. He might find himself as a top 5 tight end by the end of the season.

Good Matchups

Tyler Eifert and the Bengals take on the Cardinals this week. The Cardinals have given up five touchdowns to tight ends this season which, if you do the math, is over one touchdown per game on average. The chances of Eifert scoring this week are at an all-time high. For a struggling Bengals team, they will be looking for ways to get anything going at all. They should see this type of stat and use Eifert a lot more against Arizona. Jared Cook is set to play the Buccaneers this week who have allowed the most receiving yards to tight ends by far this season as well as the most targets and receptions. Besides touchdowns allowed, they are the worst tight end defense in the league. Teddy Bridgewater should be actively looking for Cook this week as he is likely to be open quite often.

Bad Matchups

Vernon Davis will have a very tough time this week against the Patriots. The Patriots’ defense finally let up their first touchdown last week, but their stat line against tight ends is very impressive. Through four games, they have allowed a total of 62 yards and, in PPR leagues, have allowed 3.7 fantasy points on average to tight ends. Vernon Davis is already a touchdown-dependent option, so there is no good reason to start him this week. Despite the Jets having their problems, their pass defense is a shining aspect. They are the second-best defense against tight ends this season behind the Patriots. Tight ends have averaged just 27 yards per game without any touchdowns. Playing the Jets this week is the Eagles. This is no reason to sit Zach Ertz this week, but it is something to be aware of. If you are in a position of debating between playing Ertz and another top tight end option, I would sway towards the latter.
