Last week, we got to witness the biggest quarterback performance of the season along with what could be the worst performance of the season. We also had one of the biggest injuries of the year with Patrick Mahomes finally receiving the Madden cover curse. I have looked ahead to Week 8 matchups and made my quarterback rankings for this coming week of football. Here are my top 25 quarterbacks for Week 8.

Madden Cover Curse
If you look back at players who were voted to be on the cover of the Madden videogames, you can see a trend of that player having something unfortunate happen to them the following year. It can be that they completely disappeared and never saw the field again, they experienced a serious injury, got suspended, or sometimes they are lucky and aren’t affected by the curse. Patrick Mahomes was on the cover of the latest installment, Madden 20. There was an actual discussion of whether Mahomes would see a downward trend which wasn’t the case so far this year. But Week 7 became the week where the curse took over. Mahomes went down with a scary knee injury against the Broncos and will miss significant time. There is currently no timeline for his possible return, but the Chiefs have come out and said that they are optimistic after receiving the results from an MRI. Hopefully, we will see the return of Mahomes to resume his dominance in this league.
Biggest Game of the Season?
Aaron Rodgers told the Packers this week that they don’t even need to play defense this week with how many points he would score. Rodgers had a historic day against the Raiders this week in which he had 429 yards with 5 passing touchdowns. All of those went to 5 different receivers which only makes this more impressive. On top of that, he had a rushing touchdown if he had to make this any more monumental. This week the Packers take on the Chiefs who are without Mahomes. The Chiefs might not be as dynamic as they usually are which would mean the Packers getting the ball more. Rodgers has a chance to have another big game this week.
Worst Game of the Season?
On the opposite side of the quarterback tier list, we have Sam Darnold’s Week 7. I think what Darnold said was true that he was seeing ghosts out there because he definitely wasn’t seeing his receivers very well. Darnold finished the miserable Monday night game with 86 yards with 4 interceptions and a fumble. The Patriots’ defense had his number all game and left the Jets with a fat donut on the scoreboard. Darnold won’t have a much easier opponent next week with the Jaguars’ defense staring him down. The one plus side is that Jalen Ramsey got traded away which does weaken them in the secondary. I don’t think he can play any worse than last week, so expect better from Darnold this week. He shouldn’t be on anyone fantasy team unless it’s a 2-QB league.
Good Matchup
There are a ton of good matchups this week. The honorable mentions are Deshaun Watson against the Raiders, who gave up 6 touchdowns to Aaron Rodgers last week, and Russell Wilson against the Falcons, who have allowed the most fifth-most passing yards per game and the most touchdowns this season. But those are the top two quarterbacks, so I would rather look at Mason Rudolph for this week. Rudolph is cleared to return from his concussion and will return to a great matchup against the Dolphins. Rudolph took over after Ben Roethlisberger’s season-ending injury and started off strong until he took a violent hit to the helmet that left him unconscious. Week 8 will mark his return against the Dolphins who have allowed the highest passer ratings to quarterbacks this season. They also are one of the few teams who have allowed an average of over 2 passing touchdowns this season. Mason Rudolph should have a big game in his return.
Bad Matchup
Caron Wentz will have a troubling time this week against the Bills. The Bills have allowed the fourth-lowest passing yards per game in the NFL. On top of that, they have allowed the second-least amount of passing touchdowns with four in six games. Wentz and the Eagles struggled to get anything going last week against the Cowboys in which they only put up 10 total points. The Bills won’t be any easier of an opponent than the Cowboys were, so if they are going to have any success they will need to change something up.
