If I said that the Patriots were the top-scoring defense this week, would you believe me? Well, they were yet again, adding to there touchdown count. Now it is almost impossible that the Patriots are available in your league, so who do you go with if you don’t have the Patriots? I will be going through my best options at defense for those streaming. All of my picks are owned in under 60% of leagues.
Team | Opponent | % Owned |
---|---|---|
New York Jets | Miami Dolphins | 10 |
Denver Broncos | Cleveland Browns | 22.9 |
Carolina Panthers | Tennessee Titans | 49.4 |
Dallas Cowboys | New York Giants | 32.3 |
Baltimore Ravens | New England Patriots | 40.2 |
Cleveland Browns | Denver Broncos | 17.1 |
Miami Dolphins | New York Jets | 0.6 |
New York Jets
Opponent: Miami Dolphins
Own %: 10
The Jets have had struggles on defense the past few weeks. They haven’t had a big performance in a while since Week 3, but they are set up nicely this week to regain their strength. The Dolphins average just 10.5 points per game which is worst in the NFL. They even traded away their best running back, Kenyan Drake, so it will only get worse for the Dolphins from here. The Jets are a good pick this week.
Denver Broncos
Opponent: Cleveland Browns
Own %: 22.9
The Broncos’ defense has been looking hot the last couple of weeks. They held a dynamic Colts’ offense to 15 points with a turnover last week. Baker Mayfield has been struggling for the Browns. Last week, he may have had the worst looking interception of the season. They have averaged 19 points per game which is below the NFL average. The Broncos should be able to capitalize on their recent struggles and put up some good numbers.
Carolina Panthers
Opponent: Tennessee Titans
Own %: 49.4
The Panthers are one of the top-scoring fantasy defenses but they are only owned in about 50% of leagues. Besides their Week 2 game against the Buccaneers (which makes no sense with how many interceptions Jamies Winston throws), the Panthers have mustered up at least one turnover in every game. They came back against them in Week 6 and got 7 so they made up for it. The Titans are the seventh-lowest scoring offense in the NFL which makes the Panthers a nice pick up.
Dallas Cowboys
Opponent: New York Giants
Own %: 32.3
The Cowboys are coming off a great game defensively against the Eagles in Week 7. They allowed just 10 points with 4 turnovers and 3 sacks. Their ownership took a hit because of their bye week, so it is a good time to pick them up. The Cowboys played the Giants already in Week 1 in which they had a decent game. They held their offense to 17 points and forced 2 fumbles. With their low ownership, the Cowboys are a solid pick to hold on to for the rest of the year.
Baltimore Ravens
Opponent: New England Patriots
Own %: 40.2
The Ravens are coming off their bye week which has significantly dropped their ownership. They had a great game in their last matchup against the Seahawks in which they held Russell Wilson to just 16 points. They also forced an interception and a fumble which they took both to the endzone for 6 points. This week they face the Patriots who have been led mostly by their defense. This game is likely to turn into a defensive standoff and a low scoring game.
Cleveland Browns
Opponent: Denver Broncos
Own %: 17.1
The Browns have not been the best defense but also not the worst. They held their own against the Rams and Ravens in weeks 3 and 4 with 6 total turnovers through those two games. Last week, they were able to hold the Patriots to just 21 points, and Denzel Ward had a crazy blocked field goal late in the first half. The Broncos have been one of the worst offenses with just 15.8 points per game. The Browns should be able to handle this game.
Miami Dolphins
Opponent: New York Jets
Own %: 0.6
I really didn’t want to include the Dolphins on my list but they are one of the better options this week as they are facing a struggling Jets’ offense. Sam Darnold is busy seeing ghosts out there. They are currently playing the Steelers as I am writing this and are holding their own. They have an interception with 2 sacks and only allowed 17 points through 3 quarters. They are ranked as the worst defense in the league, but this might be their one shot at looking competent.
