Week 8 didn’t have many exciting performances from quarterbacks. One notable score is how low Russell Wilson’s score was again. The former top scorer seems to have taken a step back. Daniel Jones led the charge with 4 touchdowns this week, but hopefully, we have some crazy Week 9 performances. I will be going over my rankings and who has the best chance of being the breakout star this week.

Big Week 8

Like I mentioned above, Daniel Jones was the leader for Week 8 for quarterbacks even in a losing effort. He managed to throw for 322 yards with 4 touchdowns against the Lions, but it wasn’t enough to pull out a victory in Detroit. He put the ball on the ground once with a fumble but remained perfect through the air without an interception. Jones’s next matchup against the Cowboys should be a tougher test as they have a far better pass defense than the Lions. I wouldn’t be expecting similar results in Week 9.

Mahomes Update

Patrick Mahomes suffered a dislocated knee cap two weeks ago and sat out for the Chiefs’ Sunday Night game. What was once to be a possible season-ending injury, looks to be very minor. Mahomes said that he could have played in their last game if it was a playoff game. Andy Reid has said that despite Mahomes’s excitement to return, he is going to be very cautious with him. He doesn’t want Mahomes reinjuring his knee that will sit him out for longer. There is a chance that we will see Mahomes this week, but it is up to what the doctors say is good for Mahomes moving forward.

He’s Back

Drew Brees made his triumphant return to the field this week after undergoing thumb surgery. He didn’t look too affected by it at all as he threw for 373 yards with 3 touchdowns in a victory against the Cardinals. The Saints have a bye week this week, so Brees will get extra time to practice throwing and settle back into the starting role, but he looks good to go. They face the Falcons in two weeks who have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns in the NFL, so Brees should be ready for a big outing.

Good Matchups

Russell Wilson has a great matchup this week against the Buccaneers. The Bucs had formally allowed the most passing yards in the league until being passed by the Lions this week. Ryan Tannehill was able to throw for 3 touchdowns against them so imagine what someone of Wilson’s caliber can do. The Seahawks are a more run-oriented team, but I imagine they throw more than usual this week with this kind of matchup. Jimmy Garoppolo also has a favorable matchup against the Cardinals. The Cardinals have allowed the most passing touchdowns this year, especially to tight ends. The use of George Kittle will be very important for the 49ers. Garoppolo isn’t known for throwing for a ton of yards because it isn’t the 49ers’ style, but you can expect him to find the endzone plenty of times in this game.

Bad Matchups

While Lamar Jackson is not a quarterback that I would ever sit, he does face the best defense in the NFL this week. A lot of his value this week will come from his rushing ability. He should have Marquise Brown back in the lineup which will help his cause, but the combination of the Ravens being a run-heavy offense and their matchup against the Patriots is not good for Jackson. His high number of rushes should keep him in the higher end of scoring though. It is also hard to sit Kyler Murray but this might be the week to do so. The Cardinals went through a phase of effectively moving the ball a couple of weeks ago, but they looked a lot worse last week in which they never found the endzone. The 49ers hold the best pass defense in the league which will stand as Murray’s toughest challenge yet. The injuries to David Johnson and Chase Edmonds don’t help. Kenyan Drake should be able to provide some help, but the Cardinals don’t look in good shape currently.
