There is a class of elite tight ends for fantasy football, and Zach Ertz is one of them. While there are a lot of mouths to feed on the Philadelphia Eagles, Ertz led the way with 157 targets. Coming in as TE3 last season, a full year would likely produce similar results. The top tight ends have thrown a wrench into the draft process causing some to ask how high is too high to take a tight end? We get right to that answer with Ertz.

It was another strong year for Zach Ertz, as he posed the most targets among tight ends. He was also second behind Michael Thomas in receptions no matter the position. Only three tight ends went over 1,000 receiving yards, and of course Ertz was one of them. His reliable targets and receptions make him a prime PPR standout, and there is a reason why he is in contention for a pick within the first few rounds. This was the first year over 1,000 with Ertz, but it is back to back years with eight touchdowns. Ertz before 2017 didn’t top five touchdowns. Heading into his age 29 season, Ertz should remain the most reliable fantasy option from the Eagles.

Even with the Eagles having a lot of pass-catching options, Ertz remains one of the higher target options. We can put him in the 120-140 range, but topping 150 is a tough ask again. Ertz has averaged 11 yards per reception in his career, and his catch rate was at a career high last season (74%). Inside the red zone, he should lead the Eagles again. He had 31% of the targets in the red zone, catching 57% of them for seven touchdown. Him and Alshon Jeffery are the main red zone targets, and nobody should over take them. Ertz is one of the higher floor tight ends, especially in PPR leagues. We shouldn’t see a touchdown regression either if the red zone targets hold. Even with Dallas Goedert getting more snaps and a few wideouts now on the depth chart, Ertz is a safe bet for over 110 targets. For his efficiency, that volume makes him a top option at the position.

Draft & Auction Value

Zach Ertz is going in the late second to early third round at the moment, and league settings will determine his landing spot. A TE premium league and you have these guys going with the best of them. Ertz has established himself as a premium tight end, and I don’t mind eating the price tag on him in auction leagues, or drafting him at his ADP. Getting one of the elite tight ends can be a massive advantage with the scoring differential the last few seasons. Don’t feel like you went the wrong way if you draft Ertz early.
