Buffalo Bills Team Stats 2019 Bills Snaps

4-1, 2nd AFC East

vs NYJ

6:00 pm GMT, 12/29

Buffalo are vastly moving through a rebuilding process, and have some excellent pieces from the draft and free agency. While the running game is on the older side, Buffalo is looking to improve on a strong finish. The Bills will have to utilize Josh Allen in a different way given the rushing potential seems higher than his passing potential. They don't quite have a big name wideout, but this is a group of fast wideouts that can make a home run play on any given drive. The defense will need to improve if they want to take a jump forward, as the front seven struggled at times.

Will The Passing Game Take a Step Forward?

The Bills ranked 30th in passing yards last season, which was no surprise given they went with a more run oriented attack. They also had Josh Allen who gave more with his legs. Buffalo decided to bulk up the wide receiver core a bit by adding John Brown. It is a bit odd given that they have Robert Foster who is a similar style wideout. Overall this group is a bit one dimensional, and that is a concern for a young arm. There are zero big receiving options and the tight end position is a question mark heading into the season. Buffalo has been one of the more run heavy teams in the league, and I doubt that it will change.

Can Buffalo's Defense Improve?

Defense has always been the number one priority with the Bills, and that was a focus on the offseason. They had a good defensive draft, and already have one of the better secondaries in the league. Getting to the quarterback would be a major improvement this season, and I like their odds of doing it. The Bills were in the bottom half in points per game allowed, but the offensive struggles certainly didn't make things easier on them. If they can have more control of the clock it will help. I do think the run defense improves this year with Ed Oliver being drafted to muck up the middle. This defense should thrive in the secondary, and a better front seven could push them for stronger numbers.

Will The Rushing Attack Post Top Ten Numbers Again?

Josh Allen's rushing performance was why Buffalo posted such big rushing numbers. Having 631 rushing yards on 89 attempts was major given that LeSean McCoy and Chris Ivory both rushed for under 3.5 yards per game. The aging rushing attack signed another dinosaur in Frank Gore and then signed T.J. Yeldon. While they drafted Devin Singletary, we are not sure if he is going to be used often enough to make a difference. If McCoy and Gore both struggle again, it is tough to rely on Allen's production to make enough of a difference to get them top ten gain. The play style and defense will also factor into the Bills posting these types of numbers again. They do not want to be a heavy passing team, and that has shown for a while now.
