Denver Broncos Team Stats 2018 Broncos Snaps

6-10, 3rd AFC West

vs LAC

9:25 pm GMT, 12/30

The first year with Vance Joseph as the head coach wasn't a success with the Broncos going just 5-11 and firing offensive coordinator Mike McCoy after Week 11. Bill Musgrave took over as the offensive coordinator, and he remains in that position this year. Your opinion of Denver's outlook this season likely largely hinges upon whether or not you believe in Case Keenum's breakout 2017. At the least, he should represent an upgrade over last year's mess at quarterback. Keenum's breakout came out of nowhere, but he was a highly productive college quarterback, perhaps lending some plausibility to his breakout being sustainable.

Running Back is A Question Mark

He'll swap out one talented duo of receivers -- Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen -- for another -- Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Thomas and Sanders are coming off of down years by their standards, but Sanders missed four games, and both can be somewhat excused given the combination of Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch misfiring their direction all last year. They'll be joined at the position by a couple of draft picks. In the second round of this year's NFL Draft, the team selected Courtland Sutton, and in the fourth round, they selected Daesean Hamilton, adding depth to the position.

The team will get another potential shot in the arm from Jake Butt. The pass-catching tight end slipped to the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft due to tearing his ACL in the Orange Bowl, and he spent the entire 2017 season on IR recovering. Denver's passing attack was arguably second worst in the NFL last year, and they should approach at least average this year with the potential to be better than that if most of Keenum's gains in a breakout season stick. Denver did a decent job running the ball last year with C.J. Anderson leading the way, but the team opted to move on and cut Anderson. Entering the draft, it looked like they unwisely might lean on Devontae Booker and De'Angelo Henderson to divvy up running back duties. Instead, they spent the seventh pick in the third round on Oregon running back Royce Freeman. He should shoot to the top of the depth chart and is built to carry a feature back's workload. However, the lack of experience of all of Denver's running backs makes their running attack a question mark.

The "No Fly Zone" backfield is no longer the same group it was, as Denver dealt Aqib Talib to the Rams. However, Denver's secondary still features a pair of stud corners in the form of Chris Harris Jr. and Bradley Roby. Tramaine Brock was signed at corner after a down year in Minnesota, but he has some strong seasons with the 49ers on his resume and would provide the secondary a lift if he bounces back. The team also spent the 99th pick in the draft on Boston College cornerback Isaac Yiadom, giving them another option to help fill Talib's void. Von Miller has established himself as one of the -- if not the -- best edge rushers in the NFL. He and Demarcus Ware were a fearsome one-two combo on the line from 2014-2016, and Ware's presence was missed last season. Denver lucked into perhaps the steal of the draft this year with defensive end Bradley Chubb slipping to them at pick five, and he'll be a disruptive presence opposite Ware on the defensive line. Denver should be one of the biggest gainers in wins after winning only five games last year, and they should find themselves in the middle of a competitive race for the AFC West crown.
