Is it the beginning of the end for the Patriots? That's likely a headline you've read this offseason on a click-bait article or heard uttered by a booger-eater sports talk radio host, but the answer is no. They're once again the Super Bowl betting favorites at +650, according to Bodog. Tom Brady's play can be summed up by pointing to his 2017 AP MVP award, and Bill Belichick continues to call the shots as the head coach. Perhaps equally important, New England continues to have the easiest path to a division title of any team in the NFL.

Home Record: 8-0 Away Record: 3-5 Conference Record: 8-4 Division Record: 5-1
Bye Week: 10 Head Coach: Bill Belichick Offensive Coordinator: Josh McDaniels Defensive Coordinator: Open
Special Teams: Joe Judge Owner: Robert Kraft Stadium: Gillette Stadium Surface: Grass

Lots of Turnover Again for the Patriots

There are some questions they'll have to answer this year with changing personnel and a noteworthy suspension, but Belichick and Brady remain the important pieces who will push this team to double-digit wins. The backfield will look different this season with Dion Lewis exiting as a free agent and signing with the Titans, but Rex Burkhead shined last year as a multi-purpose threat, James White is a weapon as a pass catcher, and New England spent the 31st pick in this year's NFL Draft on explosive every-down back Sony Michel. That was actually the second of New England's first-round picks, as they acquired the 23rd pick from the Rams in exchange for wideout Brandin Cooks.

Cooks played well in his lone season in New England, but if Chris Hogan stays healthier than he did playing in just nine games in the regular season last year, he'll help ease the loss of their traded deep threat. Danny Amendola also left as a free agent, but he was an ancillary piece. It's possible they upgraded their third wideout spot with the addition of Jordan Matthews. The former Eagle and Bill was fairly productive in his three years in Philadelphia but never blossomed into the player the team hoped he'd become when using the 42nd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft on him, and he was banged up for much of his one season with the Bills. The biggest addition to the receiving corps will be returning Julian Edelman. The veteran receiver missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in the preseason, and it remains to be seen how the 32-year-old will bounce back. He won't have a chance to display what he has left in the tank in games that mean something until Week 5 due to a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

And, of course, there's Rob Gronkowski. Gronk is nearly uncoverable and will continue to give opposing defenses fits. Perhaps the one area on offense that could pose problems for New England is their offensive line. The team lost tackle Nate Solder in free agency, but traded the 95th pick in this year's draft to the 49ers for tackle Trent Brown and the 143rd pick. They also used the aforementioned 23rd pick to select offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn. Most likely the line will be fine, but it could take time for their new pieces to gel. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia took the head coaching job in Detroit, and New England will proceed this season without a defensive coordinator. Linebackers coach Brian Flores will be responsible for play calling, and Belichick's greatest coaching strengths remain on that side of the ball. Last year's team played a bend-but-don't-break style of defense that ultimately broke in the Super Bowl. After inexplicably being benched in the Super Bowl, cornerback Malcolm Butler predictably left to play elsewhere. The Patriots traded for corner Jason McCourty to help fill that opening, and they spent the 56th pick in the draft on corner Duke Dawson. They also added to the defensive line by signing free agent Adrian Clayborn and trading for Danny Shelton. The changes should help them bend and break less on that side of the ball this season. Pencil New England in for 10-plus wins and a strong showing in the playoffs that's possibly capped by another championship.
