As Trade Season Begins, Where do the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers Stand? (Hollywood Hoops NBA Podcast)
As of December 15, the NBA’s trade season is officially open, which means big changes could be on the horizon in the basketball world between now and early February. All-Stars like Kevin Love, Jrue Holiday, Chris Paul and Andre Iguodala could be on the move, along with talented impact players like Danilo Gallinari and Marcus Morris. But will any of big names be on the Los Angeles Lakers or Clippers in time to join a potential championship run?
On this week’s episode of Hollywood Hoops, Eric Pincus and Josh Martin break down the Association’s in-season hot stove from every angle, from inside and outside of Southern California. Our co-hosts consider the greatest conundrum facing the league: the sheer volume of teams currently sitting on the fence between buyers and sellers. With so many squads within shouting distance of playoff contention, will the market tip toward the few definitively bad ones (i.e. the New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Pelicans, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors) while the rest of the NBA fights to fill roster holes? Or will the schedule in the coming weeks sort out true contenders from a passel of pretenders, the point where the buyers take control?
Then, Eric and Josh look at the challenges facing clubs on both sides of the negotiating table over stars stuck in hoops purgatory. Are the contracts of K-Love, CP3 and others so expensive as to make them prohibitively difficult for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder and others to move during the campaign? Will OKC’s potential postseason prospects postpone Chris’ exit until the summer?
Our co-hosts also consider the roles that the Lakers and Clippers may (or may not) play in the trade market. Can the Purple and Gold cobble together the contracts and assets they would need to pursue a helpful veteran like Iggy? Would the Clips be smart to part ways with some of their depth to bolster their title odds? Do either of Staples Center’s NBA tenants actually need to shake up their respective rosters to bring the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to downtown LA?
Eric and Josh dive into all that—along with a recap of Baron Davis’ annual Black Santa Christmas charity game—in the latest edition of Hollywood Hoops!
