At What Cost Should the Lakers Pursue Derrick Rose? (Hollywood Hoops NBA Podcast)

Lakers Nation returned to work after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend feeling, in parts, upset and, in some cases, panicked. That’ll happen when the Purple and Gold get demolished by the rival Boston Celtics on national television. In truth, whatever issues that shellacking laid bare (i.e. wing defense and backup playmaking) were there long before the Lakers strolled into and slumped out of the TD Garden on Monday night. And if recent reports are to be believed, the 16-time NBA champions may see at least some of their solution in the person of Derrick Rose.

On this week’s episode of Hollywood Hoops, Eric Pincus and Josh Martin get to the root of the problems in Laker Land and consider, once again, what can be done about them before the trade deadline passes and the postseason push begins in earnest.

Up first, our co-hosts dissect that 139-107 loss in Beantown. Are the Lakers really, truly, fundamentally flawed, as the totality of their defeats against the NBA’s elites (i.e. the Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks and Celtics) suggest? Or was this just an isolated incident of Anthony Davis working his way back after a five-game absence and/or LeBron James and the rest of the roster having a bad night in January? In doing so, Eric and Josh can’t help but turn back to Rajon Rondo, whose run of subpar play continued in his old stomping grounds.

Then, we consider the recent rumors pertaining to the Lakers’ supposed pursuit of Derrick Rose as a potential bandage to the roster. What kind of package could the Lakers realistically cobble together that would satisfy the Detroit Pistons without completely compromising their own near future? Would it even make sense for the Purple and Gold to push in their remaining chips when there may be comparably helpful options available in free agency in the coming weeks?

Finally, in light of the Clippers’ back-to-back against the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks, Eric and Josh revisit the Luka Doncic-Trae Young debate before recapping the Pincus family’s on-court triumphs over the holiday weekend.
