Dwight Howard May Be the Third-Most Important Laker in Orlando (Hollywood Hoops NBA Podcast)

The Lakers and Clippers are en route from Los Angeles to Orlando, Florida for the NBA’s restart at the ESPN Wide World of Sport complex on the campus of Walt Disney World. But who will be joining each of LA’s squads in the Magic Kingdom? And how could those changes affect their survival on the court inside the NBA’s precarious “bubble”?

In this week’s episode of Hollywood Hoops, Eric Pincus and Josh Martin take a long look at what J.R. Smith and Dwight Howard figure to bring to the Lakers in Orlando, now that both are in for the pandemic playoffs. Can J.R., with his ability to heat up from three-point range, be a not-so-secret weapon for the Purple and Gold? Or will his history of shenanigans catch up to him? With Dwight opting in for the resumption of play, can the former All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year solidify his Hall of Fame case by claiming a championship near where he used to star for the Orlando Magic?

Our co-hosts also consider who’s not going to the league’s “campus environment” yet—or at all—and what that says about the viability of Adam Silver’s carefully crafted plan. What will the Lakers miss without Lionel Hollins on the sideline next to head coach Frank Vogel? How far behind the Clippers might Landry Shamet fall after testing positive for COVID-19? What can the Washington Wizards, Indiana Pacers and Brooklyn Nets reasonably expect from the experience (other than money) without Bradley Beal, Victor Oladipo and a whole host of players, respectively? How should the NBA assess the threat posed by a rise of coronavirus infections locally and nationally, and what warning does MLS’ predicament offer to basketball?

To close out the show, Eric and Josh review the recent news that the NBA may form a second “bubble” in Chicago for the eight teams not included in the Orlando plan. What upside might there be for both the league and the clubs in attendance in the Windy City? How could a light summer league in the Midwest help everyone involved prepare for an uncertain future?
