Getting the NBA Back is About More than Just Games, But Avoiding a Lockout (Hollywood Hoops NBA Podcast)

There’s plenty of good news AND bad news around the NBA these days, amid the coronavirus shutdown. The good news: teams around the league are beginning to reopen their practice facilities for voluntary individual workouts conducted under strict, socially distanced guidelines. Better yet, the Lakers and Clippers could join the growing group of clubs welcoming players in for shooting sessions as soon as this week.

The bad news? The league is moving into the third month of its hiatus, the future of the 2019-20 season (and beyond) remains uncertain—since it sits at the mercy of of a highly contagious and still somewhat mysterious virus—and amid all that uncertainty, the NBA’s players and owners have much to sort out as the financial picture grows grimmer and grimmer. Worse still, if the two sides can’t negotiate their way through this stormy situation, the best basketball league in the world might be headed toward its first lockout in 2011.

On this week’s episode of Hollywood Hoops, Eric Pincus and Josh Martin dissect the potentially difficult situation facing the NBA and the NBPA during this uncertain time. Our co-hosts also discuss the parallels in personality between Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant that were revealed in the most recent episodes of ESPN’s documentary series, “The Last Dance,” and look ahead to some upcoming hoops-related content, including the Kevin Durant-produced “Basketball County” on Showtime and “Blackballed,” a show about Donald Sterling’s ouster from the NBA—as told by the likes of Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, JJ Redick, Matt Barnes, Doc Rivers, Adam Silver and Jemele Hill—on Quibi.

To keep things light, Eric also divulges details about his current projects in quarantine, from deep cleaning the Pincus household to serving as the commissioner of Bleacher Report’s fantasy draft and running his own Discord server for those curious about the business of basketball.
