Through the ups, through the downs, it’s always gonna be a Lakers town. At least, that’s according to Joey Dosik (that’s DAW-sik, not DOH-sik), the singer-songwriter and basketball podcast producer best known for his work with the funk supergroup Vulfpeck. With vegan pastries in hand, Joey trekked out from Highland Park to the Pincus Estate in West LA to take his turn at the table as a special guest on the final episode of Hollywood Hoops in 2019.
The co-hosts tip off the year-end edition of the podcast by chopping it up with Joey about the Purple and Gold’s success so far through the 2019-20 NBA season with LeBron James and Anthony Davis at the helm. Joey, in particular, marvels at the similarities between the current Lakers squad and his beloved “Showtime” squads, when Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were the unstoppable 1-2 punch.
Joey also explains why, for all the cheekiness of his new track “Lakers Town,” he’s not a Clippers hater by any means.
Then, Eric and Josh pick Joey’s brain on his favorite Lakers memories. Turns out, Joey has plenty of those, thanks in no small part to the upper-deck season tickets his family has enjoyed from the Forum to Staples Center. Joey also shares how he got into the music business, the unfortunate twist of fate that inspired him to blend his biggest sports passion into his profession, and the inside scoop on the “Michael McBolton Basketball Podcast.”
Before wrapping up the show (and the year), our co-hosts talk with Joey about the perks of performing at NBA arenas and invite their gifted guest to pepper Eric with questions about what the Lakers can (and might) do to shore up their roster.
