The basketball world is still mourning the loss of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others, but the business of the NBA must go on. The trade deadline will come and go this Thursday, February 6, which doesn’t leave much time for the league’s buyers and sellers to sort themselves and negotiate accordingly. The Lakers and Clippers, of course, know where they stand—they’re firmly buyers, in the thick of the championship chase—but is the trade market the best way for Los Angeles’ NBA squads to address their respective needs?
On this week’s episode of Hollywood Hoops, Eric Pincus and Josh Martin take one last look at the transaction landscape before the NBA closes up shop for the 2019-20 season. Our co-hosts consider the Lakers’ needs for a secondary playmaker who can shoot and a two-way wing, while once again taking into consideration the team’s limitations. After all, there’s only so much the trade machine can do to realistically turn Kyle Kuzma and other role players into a game-changing addition. And with playoff-tested veterans like Darren Collison, Iman Shumpert and Jeff Green available in free agency—and more potentially to come as buyout candidates—would it even make sense for the Purple and Gold to blow up their roster in search of solutions?
Eric and Josh also dig back into the Clippers’ pursuit of reliable big men and pass-first point guards. Doc Rivers’ squad has dealt with its fair share of inconsistency amid injuries to Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and others. Under those circumstances, has the team been able to properly evaluate its weaknesses and needs? With their own 2020 first-round pick and plenty of tradeable contracts—including those of Moe Harkless and Montrezl Harrell—the Clippers could take a serious swing at a talent capable of shifting the balance of power firmly in their favor. Then again, they, like the Lakers, could feasibly fill their holes in free agency.
On top of all that, our co-hosts offer their thoughts on the Mamba memorial at LA Live, the league’s legendary tributes at All-Star Weekend and more in the latest #HollywoodHoops!
