Presidents Day Weekend in Chicago was frigid, but NBA All-Star brought plenty of heat to the Windy City in mid-February. From controversial Slam Dunk Contest results and touching Kobe Bryant tributes, to outstanding performances by Kawhi Leonard and LeBron James in a revamped All-Star Game for the ages, basketball’s winter showcase was a rousing success—and Eric Pincus and Josh Martin were there to take it all in and share their observations in the latest episode of Hollywood Hoops!
Our co-hosts begin with a consideration of All-Star Saturday Night, with the Slam Dunk results still top of mind. Was Aaron Gordon robbed of a high-flying title for a second time? Did Derrick Jones Jr. deserve to take home the trophy? Was the fix already in with Dwyane Wade, DJJ’s former teammate on the Miami Heat, sitting on the panel of judges?
Those concerns get new life when Eric’s wife, Dorothy Pincus, takes the mic to share her concerns. After congratulating Dwight Howard on turning around his image with the Los Angeles Lakers this season, she rips into D-Wade for allegedly tilting the tables in Derrick’s favor, and explains why an unfair result (in her eyes) sets a bad example for future generations.
Eric and Josh then get into the All-Star Game itself. The combination of winning money for charity by quarter and playing to a target score to decide the overall result clearly helped to get the best players on the planet to play hard in an exhibition game. But could such an Elam Ending-style conclusion eventually make its way into meaningful NBA contests? And though Kawhi led all scorers with 30 points, were LeBron or Chris Paul more deserving of MVP consideration?
Finally, our co-hosts take a fresh look at the league’s buyout market, just as Reggie Jackson reaches an agreement to leave the Detroit Pistons and join forces with the Los Angeles Clippers. Where and how might the Lakers find the help they’re looking for?
