How Can You Bet on the Oscars?
Betting on the Oscars is no different than group betting in sports, such as golf or motorsports. Bettors can wager on each category such as Best Actor or Best Actress, typically a field of five or more. There are only five nominations per category at the Oscars, besides Best Picture which sees 10. So once nominations are announced, bettors can wager on which nominees will win each category.
Before nominations are announced, however, only popular categories such as Best Director or Best Actress will see offered odds with much more in the field to wager on. This is why wagering on the Oscars as early as possible is so important, because the odds and markets is as much of a moving target as anything offered on sportsbooks.
Some books have recently added total markets at the Oscars, with 2026 seeing Over/Under markets for both Sinners and One Battle After Another based on the number of awards won. Bettors can wager on whether a film will win over or under a certain number of awards for the night. As this market is still very new to the American industry, it will continue to grow with time – already proven with the prediction markets available on platforms such as Kalshi.
What are the 2027 Oscars Categories?
There is one new category at the 2027 Oscars which will recognize stunts, as the ‘Achievement in Stunt Design’ will make its debut – long overdue. It’s nice to see the stunt teams get recognition, albeit very late with technology and CGI these days, but in 2026 we also saw ‘Achievement in Casting’ added to the Oscars. Below is a list of the categories at the 2027 Oscars.
- Best Picture
- Best Director
- Best Actor
- Best Actress
- Best Supporting Actor
- Best Supporting Actress
- Best Original Screenplay
- Best Adapted Screenplay
- Best Cinematography
- Best Casting
- Best Animated Film
- Best International Film
- Best Documentary
- Best Stunt Design
- Best Production Design
- Best Costume Design
- Best Makeup & Hairstyle
- Best Sound
- Best Score
- Best Song
- Best Film Editing
- Best Visual Effects
- Best Live Action Short Film
- Best Documentary Short Film
- Best Animated Short Film
As the bolded categories are new to the Oscars, there are no voting patterns for proper analysis of the voting process and patterns. Therefore, those two categories (along with the short films) are not among our ranked categories above and will not be part of the yearly analyzation of 2027 Oscars contenders.
Who Votes on the Oscars Winners?
The short answer is that the Academy votes on each category at the Oscars. Not every member votes on every category, however, as voters are regulated to their own categories when voting. For example, Tom Hanks can vote on Best Actor because he won Best Actor in the past giving him automatic entry into the Academy. Since he is A) an actor and B) a Best Actor winner, he votes on the Best Actor category.
This is true for each department of moviemaking recognized at the Academy Awards, as hairdressers and makeup artists in the Academy vote on the Makeup & Hairstyle category and animators in the Academy vote on the Best Animated Film category. Directors vote for directors, costume designers vote for costumes, etc…
The Best Picture category is the only category in which every member of the Academy can vote on the award, which is a different process than all the other categories. When voting on the Best Picture, members vote using a ranking system – submitting a list from best to worst of the 10 nominated films. Once a movie hits 50% of the votes it wins. If no film hits 50% of the votes then the film with the fewest No. 1 votes is eliminated and re-voting begins.
This is repeated until a film hits 50%. The process is in place to avoid a film that has the most No. 1 votes but also many last place votes.
What are the Academy Award Branches?
There are 19 branches in the Academy, each branch consisting of members eligible to vote in specific categories.
