NHL betting lines explained
Every NHL game has three core markets. Here is how each one works, using a sample matchup between the Colorado Avalanche and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Moneyline
You pick the winner. A minus number is the favorite, a plus number is the underdog.
- Colorado -150, bet $150 to win $100. Total return $250.
- Chicago +130, bet $100 to win $130. Total return $230.
The bigger the minus number, the heavier the favorite. At -300 you risk $300 to win $100.
Puck line
Hockey’s version of the point spread, almost always set at 1.5 goals. Because NHL games are low scoring, the payout swings hard.
- Colorado -1.5 (+160), Colorado must win by two or more goals. A $100 bet wins $160.
- Chicago +1.5 (-190), Chicago wins the bet if it loses by exactly one goal or wins the game. You risk $190 to win $100.
An empty net goal in the final minute is what decides most puck line bets.
Total goals (over/under)
You bet on the combined goals scored by both teams. Most NHL totals sit at 5.5 or 6.5.
- Over 6.5 (-105) wins if the teams combine for 7 goals or more.
- Under 6.5 (-115) wins at 6 goals or fewer.
A 6-3 final goes over. A 3-2 final goes under.
How to read NHL betting lines today
Read the odds table left to right: teams, moneyline, puck line, total, then the sportsbook offering that price.
Two details matter in hockey.
- First, standard moneyline, puck line and total bets settle on the final result including overtime and the shootout. Regulation time markets are listed separately and priced differently, so check which one you are backing.
- Second, a confirmed starting goalie can move a moneyline by 20 to 30 points on its own.
Why NHL odds move
- Starting goalies. Confirmations usually land on game day morning. A backup in net can flip a team from -140 to +110.
- Injuries and lineup changes. A top line forward or a first pair defenseman scratched late shifts both the moneyline and the total.
- Betting volume. Heavy money on one side forces books to adjust the price.
- Schedule spots. Back to back games and long road trips are priced in.
The number you see in the morning is rarely the number at puck drop. That is why comparing books is worth the extra minute.
Where to find the best NHL betting odds
No sportsbook has the best price on every game. A 10 point difference on a moneyline is common, and over a season it is the difference between a winning and a losing record.
Example: Colorado at -150 on one book and -140 on another. On a $100 bet that is $71.43 profit versus $76.92. Same bet, same result, 8% more return for using the second book.

NHL Betting Odds FAQ
It is the underdog puck line. The team can lose by one goal and the bet still wins. If Chicago is +1.5 and loses 4-3, the bet cashes.
A $100 bet returns $200 in profit, $300 in total. Plus odds always show what you win on a $100 stake.
You risk $150 to win $100. Minus odds show what you need to bet to win $100.
Standard moneyline, puck line and total bets settle after overtime and the shootout. Regulation time markets are listed separately.
Books pull lines when key news is pending, usually a goalie or injury update. Prices return once the news is confirmed.
