2026-27 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Winner Odds

2026-27 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Best Bet

Current Best Bet: Ausar Thompson (Pistons)

Ausar Thompson is the best bet for Defensive Player of the Year. Victor Wembanyama is the overwhelming favorite to repeat at -360, but that price is too expensive to actually bet — there’s no real value laying that much to win so little. Thompson, priced at +2500, is the play underneath him: he’s fully healthy after a full offseason of training for the first time since his blood clot scare, just signed a five-year, $155 million extension that signals Detroit’s long-term faith in him, and projects for an even bigger role as a versatile, high-motor defender who guards the opponent’s top perimeter threat. At a fraction of Wembanyama’s price, Thompson is the clear second-best bet in the field.

2026-27 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Sleepers

Rudy Gobert and Giannis Antetokounmpo are the sleepers. Gobert remains the foundation of Minnesota’s defense according to coach Chris Finch, who said the whole scheme will still be built around him even with LaMelo Ball now running the point, and he’s a four-time DPOY whose rim-protecting impact rarely dips.

Giannis brings a different kind of disruption to Miami after averaging just 36 games last season through injury trouble in Milwaukee; he says he feels good health-wise and has already praised the Heat’s defensive speed and culture, and his length and versatility at the top of Miami’s scheme give him a real path to a first career DPOY if he stays on the floor. Both sit behind Wembanyama and Thompson in the market, but both have the individual pedigree to crash the race.
