Los Angeles Clippers Team Stats 2021 Clippers Team Stats

23-10, 1st in West Pacific

The City of Los Angeles enjoyed another NBA Championship season. However, for Clipper fans, the wrong LA team hoisted the Larry O'Brien Trophy. The Lakers' franchise has 17 NBA titles, a dozen of those coming while in Los Angeles. The Clippers have zero. Like their cross-town rivals, the Clippers franchise journey started in another city. Originally the Buffalo Braves, the 1970 expansion franchise spent all but one season during the 1970s playing in the NBA's Atlantic Division. Ownership moved the franchise to California, and they became the San Diego Clippers. Buffalo made three playoff appearances in the 70s but managed to win only one series. The shift to the west coast didn't help improve the team's fortunes. They actually got worse. The San Diego version of the Clippers never played a single NBA playoff game. San Diego finished last or next to last in the Pacific Division every year for six straight seasons. Ahead of the 1984-85 season, owners decided to tap the lucrative L.A. Hollywood market.

The shift north up the Pacific Coast did little or nothing to improve the blight of one of the most laughable franchises in sports. Los Angeles continued to add to their string of losing seasons, peaking at a dozen straight in 1990-91. In fact, across two decades, the Clippers franchise produced four seasons with a winning record. Many wondered how the Clippers' brass felt like they could compete with one of the most visible franchises in sports, let alone in the same town. In 1991-92, the Clippers made their first of two back-to-back playoff appearances. They were the first for the franchise while playing in California. Los Angeles exited in the first round both times. Starting in 1993, the Clippers would return to their non-winning ways. Even though they made the playoffs during the 1996-97 season, LA would string together another dozen consecutive losing records. The Clippers were becoming the poster child in sports for how to lose.

In 2005-06, Clippers' fans enjoyed only the sixth winning season. However, LA lost a disappointing seventh game in the semifinals to Phoenix. The Clippers had still never been to an NBA Conference Finals. During the 2010 NBA Draft, the Clippers' fortunes began to change. They drafted heralded power forward Blake Griffin. Griffin won Rookie of the Year honors and helped the Clippers begin a different streak the following season. Los Angeles would launch a streak of consecutive winning seasons that would hit nine and counting last year. The Clippers would win more than 50 games five of those seasons. Los Angeles has only missed the playoffs once since Griffin's second season. However, Blake Griffin is long gone, now playing in Detroit. A momentary rebuild reshaped the face of the Clippers. Nevertheless, an extensive overhaul ahead of 2018-19 still did not push the Clippers any closer to their first NBA Finals.

After this one-year experiment, the Clippers overhauled the roster again. This time they targeted two high-profile superstars. LA hauled in a former NBA Champion, plus a five-time NBA All-Star named the first-team NBA defensive unit twice. Ahead of the 2019-20 season, many predicted the "other team in Los Angeles" was the team to beat for the NBA Title. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, along with a talented supporting cast, did not disappoint.

The Clippers had a solid season but still finished behind the Lakers in the division. Fans had their sights set on an all-LA Western Conference Final and final redemption for decades of playing second fiddle to their cross-town rivals. It never happened. The upstart Denver Nuggets shocked the Clippers, sweeping three straight games to come back from a 3 to 1 deficit. Denver actually smacked the Clippers soundly in the final two games. The Clippers front office didn't panic this time. During the offseason, LA made a few moves to reinforce their depth. However, they kept the core of the roster intact. Early results for 2020-21 are proving this a smart decision.

The Western Conference has realigned a couple of teams, but the race is still tight. The Lakers, unsurprisingly, are the favorite. However, the Clippers are one of three solid teams with a roster strong enough to contend. As they did before the start of last season, many oddsmakers put both Los Angeles teams at or near the top for title contention. Early season statistics have the pair of Los Angeles teams as the only two to boast top-10 offensive and defensive teams. It seems a given that the Clippers will continue the longest string of winning seasons in franchise history. The trick will be to alter their playoff fortunes and earn their first trip to an NBA Final.
