Los Angeles Lakers Team Stats 2021 Lakers Team Stats

22-11, 2nd in West Pacific

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most decorated franchises in professional sports history. A pair of Minnesota business people purchased the disbanded Detroit Gems franchise in 1947. They moved the team to Minneapolis and named them after the Land of a Thousand Lakes. The Lakers wasted no time starting their run at success. As the Minneapolis Lakers, the franchise won championships over their first two seasons in professional basketball. The Lakers would fail to make the NBA playoffs for the first time in their tenth season. They would not miss out again until the first and only pair of back-to-back failed playoff seasons in 1974-75. During this streak of playoff appearances, the Lakers would make seven more NBA Finals. However, now in Los Angeles, the Lakers would lose all seven to their dreaded rivals, the Boston Celtics.

For all their success, Lakers' fans were starved for a championship. They finally secured their first NBA Title playing in Tinseltown by defeating the New York Knicks in five games. New York would turn the tables on the Lakers the following season, thwarting a chance to repeat. After their brief two-year playoff hiatus, the Lakers would start a 17-year streak that would include nine trips to the NBA Finals and five more NBA Championships. As the team entered the 1990s, losing the 1991 Final to the Chicago Bulls, the same level of championship success eluded the Lakers. While Los Angeles only missed the playoffs during the 1990s, they only managed to make one appearance in the Western Conference Finals. LA was swept by the Utah Jazz that season. However, championship success would come again to LA in 1999.

A new cast of superstars would launch another dominant LA run. The Lakers would win three-consecutive NBA Titles behind Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. Despite O'Neal's exodus, Bryant would lead LA to four more Finals and another pair of championships. A four-game sweep in the Dallas Mavericks' conference semifinals in 2010-11 seemed to trigger the first fall from grace for the Lakers. After a four-game sweep in the first round by San Antonio two years later, Los Angeles would begin the longest playoff drought in franchise history.

It would be six long years before LA would return to the playoffs. In 2020-21, they returned in full glory. Led by a new cast of superstars, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Los Angeles endured the pandemic-challenged 2020-21 schedule to hoist another banner. Los Angeles finished with the third-best record during the regular season. However, they steamrolled their way to another title, losing a total of five games across four seven-game series. The Lakers climbed to the top of the overall standings thus far in 2020-21. What's most impressive is the 10-point difference the Lakers are posting for the margin of victory. Los Angeles has a top-10 scoring offense backed up by what has become a tremendously solid defense. The only important change LA made with the roster was to add a deeper supporting cast for the oft-injured Davis. Los Angeles shifted some veteran faces on the bench but maintained essentially the same core that raced to last year's championship. The Lakers are clearly the front-runner to add another back-to-back NBA Championship to their trophy case.
