Colorado Sports Betting

denver broncosColorado sports betting is live and legal! As long as you’re at least 21 and located in the Centennial State, you can place bets right from your mobile device. The official launch for Colorado sports betting came on May 1st, 2020, with four online sportsbooks available from the very beginning. More online sports betting sites would later expand into the state as well.

In summer of 2019, state legislature created the initial sports betting bill for the state of Colorado. There was a total of 1.2 million votes needed for the legalization of sports betting in the state. The legal betting bill got a total of approximately 1.3 million votes, winning by around 20,000 votes. A refurendum that restricted new taxes was needed because of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Residents of the state must approve any new tax increase in Colorado.

Currently, Colorado sports betting operators have access to three different wagering licenses:
-Sports betting operator
-Internet sports betting operator
-Master license

All of the 33 different casinos in Colorado can apply for master licenses. Casinos can also partner with an online sports gambling site or a retail sportsbook, with the option to do both for certain operators. At 10%, the tax rate for Colorado sports wagering is one of the lowest in the sports betting market. All of the most popular legal sportsbooks are live in Colorado, such as DraftKings Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, and FanDuel Sportsbook. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, as Bally Bet Sportsbook, BetFred Sports, Maverick Sports, the FOX Sports online sportsbook FOX Bet, and the Penn National betting platform Barstool Sportsbook are all live in the state. With dedicated fans of local teams like the Denver Broncos, Colorado Avalanche, Denver Nuggets, and Colorado Rockies, sports betting in the state should continue its growth for years to come.

Colorado Top Sportsbook Apps

Colorado has had a wide range of legal sports betting apps pop up throughout the state. They also differ in size like DraftKings and FanDuel sportsbooks being two of the largest U.S. sports betting retailers, to local books like Smarkets and BetWildwood.

The sports betting market is far from complete. 15 sportsbooks have been launched since the start of May, and more will continue to infiltrate Colorado. Outside of New Jersey and Nevada, Colorado might become another sports betting hub with how quickly the market has expanded.

Colorado Retail Sportsbooks

While online sports betting has been a huge hit in the Colorado sports betting market, retail locations are still a hotspot to place wagers. While placing sports wagers from your mobile device is a bit more convenient, some bettors prefer placing in-person bets at different licensed casinos. In addition to tribal casino sportsbooks, most of the brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are in Black Hawk, Cripple Creek, and Central City. Here are some of the most popular retail sports betting options in the state of Colorado:

  • Mardi Gras Casino Black Hawk (DraftKings Sportsbook)
  • Johnny Nolon’s Casino Cripple Creek (Bet Sports Sportsbook)
  • Isle Casino Hotel Black Hawk (Caesars Sportsbook)
  • Saratoga Casino Black Hawk (Betfred Sports)
  • Ameristar Black Hawk (Barstool Sportsbook)

Colorado Futures Bet: Denver Broncos To Win Super Bowl ()

denver broncosWhile it’s no guarantee, this is easily the best Denver Broncos squad since Peyton Manning hung up his cleats. After years of looking for a quarterback, the Broncos swung for the fences with a trade for former Super Bowl-winning passer Russell Wilson. His experience, and physical talents, will come in handy when making throws to young receivers like Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton. And don’t forget that this defense has the potential to stop the high-powered offenses of division rivals like the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders. With young defensive stars like Bradley Chubb and Pat Surtain II, this team will look to smother opposing offenses all season long. New head coach Nathaniel Hackett should bring a new energy to a team that’s been starving for a postseason run. Take a flier on the team to go all the way this season.

Colorado Sports Betting Legal Timeline

Colorado 1Colorado’s lawmakers passed Proposition DD in 2019, and Colorado voters approved the bill in November. Regulations and oversight of Colorado’s sports betting was handed to the Colorado Division of Gaming.

Once the legal framework for how taxes would be applied to sportsbook operations and what the fees and tax rates on revenue would be, Colorado was ready to launch. The happy day for Colorado sports’ fans occurred on May 1, 2020.

The physical sportsbooks in Colorado’s legislation kept them concentrated in the two primary areas that housed the state’s casinos. With a partnership at a casino facility that earned approval to house a sportsbook, online sportsbook apps were also open to launch.

The revenue at the brick-and-mortar locations was drastically limited by the circumstances surrounding safe operations. However, the mobile apps started with modest revenues as well. Most of the reason was directly related to the limited number of active sports leagues.

Fewer games meant fewer betting options. However, as professional baseball and basketball kicked off shortened seasons, revenue for Colorado sports betting began to grow. In August, sports betting produced the best numbers yet.

After four full months of legal sports betting, Colorado was still falling short of expected revenue generation. The opening of the NFL season and the push for the MLB playoffs changed that. With one of the most enthusiastic professional team fan bases in the country, Denver Broncos fans were certainly helpful in this positive shift of good fortune.

Colorado Sports Betting History

Colorado’s efforts to bring sports betting to the Centennial State had bipartisan support in the legislature. Two Democrats and two Republicans sponsored Colorado HB 1327. The Bill was introduced in April 2019 and navigated its way through the general session with few problems.

The majority of the discussion was over the disbursement of revenues. Many states had automatically attached sports betting revenues to their state’s education fund. However, Colorado’s lawmakers felt it better to distribute much need monies elsewhere.

Most lawmakers, who held even modest reservations against sports betting, came on board when with the proposal to use a portion of sports betting revenue for creating a state water plan fund. After barely a month of discussion, HB 1327 was presented for a vote.

Support for sports betting in Colorado was overwhelming from elected officials. The bill passed the Colorado Senate by a 27 to 8 vote. The governor signed the bill one week after it was presented on his desk by legislators.

The next step in the process was Colorado voter approval. Ironically, this final and ultimately necessary step was harder than getting the bill through the senate and endorsed by the governor.

While there seemed to be an enormous amount of vocal support behind legalizing sports betting in the state, Colorado voters approved HB 1327 by less than a 3 percent margin. Regardless of the narrow victory of the bill, sports betting was now legal in Colorado.

Key points in the bill were immediately implemented. Regulations, tax rates and application requirements would be overseen by a newly created governing body. The Colorado Limited Gaming Commission (CLGC) was created as a sub-division of the Department of Revenue.

The CLGC would allow the approval of 33 sports betting master licenses to be restricted to Colorado’s three casino locations in Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. Through these approved brick-and-mortar locations, online sportsbook apps could partner and secure a license to provide online sports betting to Coloradans.

All total, there were six different classifications of sports betting licenses created by the CLGC. Two classes of vendor licenses have yet to become a factor, but the immediate addition of Internet Sports Betting Licenses was critical.

In the first month of launch in the Mile High state, Colorado saw a betting handle of $25.6 million. Since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized sports betting, that was the second-best handle seen in the first month of launch for any state outside of Nevada. Only Indiana had a higher first-month handle at $35.2 million.

The launch also came in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, which affects the state more than anything. As live sports comeback and things return to normal over the next few years, Colorado could become a big sports betting hub among the states.

They already have a strong foundation as four sportsbooks opened for business on May 1, 2020. It is only a matter of time until more sports betting operators jump into the Mile High state and create an extensive sports betting business for Colorado.
