Colorado Sports Betting
Colorado launched sports betting on May 1, 2020. On the first day of launch, four sportsbooks ready for operations. As the months followed, more sportsbooks entered the Centennial State market and helped to continue to grow sports betting in Colorado.
After the Colorado state legislature approved a sports betting bill in summer 2019, the state was allowed to vote on the matter needing over 1.2 million “yes” votes for it to pass. More than 1.3 million people voted, and Colorado sports betting passed by about 20,000 votes. Colorado law required a referendum because of a restriction on implementing new taxes known as a Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Anything that has a chance to increase taxes on Colorado residents must be voted on.
There are three types of sports betting licenses that Colorado offers for sports betting operators.
– Master license
– Sports betting operator
– Internet sports betting operator
Each of Colorado’s 33 casinos can apply for a master license. If the casino is approved, then they could partner with a retailer or online sports betting operator. Some sportsbooks also offer both. Sports betting is taxed at a 10 percent rate, which is very friendly for the industry. It is part of the reason why Colorado should see booming growth early on.
Colorado Top Sportsbook Apps
Colorado already sees a variety of sportsbooks pop up throughout the state. They also differ in size like DraftKings and FanDuel sportsbooks being two of the largest U.S. sports betting retailers, to local books like Smarkets and BetWildwood.
The sports betting market is far from complete. 15 sportsbooks have been launched since the start of May, and more will continue to infiltrate Colorado. Outside of New Jersey and Nevada, Colorado might become another sports betting hub with how quickly the market has expanded.
#1 DraftKings Sportsbook
DraftKings has been tremendously successful in each state they have launched their sportsbook. They have built a presence in both the physical casino side of sports betting, plus through their wildly popular sportsbook app.
When Colorado launched online sports betting on May 1, 2020, DraftKings was ready. They were one of a group of four sportsbook apps to launch on that date. However, DraftKings is leading the pack in the race for the best welcome bonus package.
DraftKings will also give you a $1,000 deposit bonus at a 20% match rate & a $50 free bet. You will need to deposit $5,000 to receive the full bonus.
#2 FanDuel Sportsbook
Like its DFS competitor DraftKings, FanDuel was ready to launch on day-one in Colorado. The FanDuel sportsbook performance has been an industry leader since its first launch in New Jersey. FanDuel consistently ranks at or near the top of total betting revenue.
They are expecting big things in Colorado. FanDuel has one of the most extensive futures odds postings for won/loss wagers, plus betting on prospective division, conference and league champions.
While there isn’t a deposit bonus in the FanDuel welcome offer, they have doubled the risk-free first bet that many sportsbooks extend to new accounts. New Colorado FanDuel sportsbook accounts will receive a risk-free first bet up to $1,000.
#3 William Hill
Like MGM International, William Hill is another betting and gaming company with an internationally strong reputation. Since its initial launch in New Jersey in 2018, William Hill has made dramatic improvements to the sportsbook platform.
They have one of the most user-friendly layouts, with seamless transitions between the website on PC and the mobile app. Based in the United Kingdom, William Hill will frequently post slightly more favorable odds than their U.S. competitors.
New Colorado William Hill sportsbook accounts will also receive a welcome bonus. Like BetMGM, William Hill is extending a risk-free first bet offer of up to $500. Register for a free account and make a minimum deposit, and your first bet is on the house up to $500. Make sure you use the promo code to secure your risk-free bet.
BetMGM linked up with a partnership at the Midnight Rose Casino in Cripple Creek. There is an excellent variety of sports and individual game bets available to Colorado sports’ fans. You can download the BetMGM sportsbook app for Apple devices at the App Store.
Android users can visit the BetMGM website on a browser and follow the simple instructions to download. Setting up a free BetMGM sportsbook account is just as easy. Once you complete the quick process of registering, be sure to take advantage of the welcome offer.
BetMGM is offering new Colorado sports bettors a $600 risk-free first bet. The only requirement is to complete the registration and make a minimum $10 deposit to your account. If your first bet doesn’t win on BetMGM, they’ll put up to $600 back into your account.
PointsBet first launched in the United States in January of 2019. Originally founded in Australia, PointsBet is a cutting-edge bookmaker that prides itself on having the quickest and most user-friendly app (iOS and Android) while also providing the best content and experience for sports bettors. PointsBet is the only U.S. online bookmaker to offer PointsBetting – a unique and innovative way to bet.
PointsBetting is a high-risk, high-reward form of betting that, as the name suggests, is currently unique to PointsBet. While using their PointsBetting platform, clients are either rewarded or docked by how right or wrong their wager was. Unlike fixed odds, each point of difference from the spread or total becomes a multiplier of the original stake, allowing a bettor to win or lose more and more based upon the outcome of their wager.
PointsBet has made big splashes partnering with the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, and Colorado Boulder in the state. You can bet now with PointsBet and get $2,000 in risk-free bets as a new user.
#6 Fox Bet
Fox Bet is partnered with The Stars Group and is in Pennsylvania and New Jersey with goals of expanding soon. Bettors can sync their Poker Stars account with their FoxBet account for easy access between betting and playing poker. You will find plenty of great promotions, and the largest number of odds boosts across different sports that you will find with any other online sportsbook.
Fox Bet does not have any official partners in Colorado yet, but the sportsbook is a giant business backed by Fox Corporation and Flutter, who bought the Stars Group. The Sportsbook does have licensing for the NBA, NFL, and MLB, something few others can brag about.
Right now, you can get a $500 risk-free bet as a new user. There are also tons of odds boosts, free bets, insured bets, and more available for existing users.

Colorado Sports Betting Going Rocky Mountain High
The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports betting in May 2018. A few states, such as New Jersey, were ready to welcome sports bettors with open arms. States with strong ties to tourism envisioned an immediate connection.
Few states west of the Mississippi River were eager to become the next Nevada. Progress in the Plains States and across the Rocky Mountains was slow. However, Colorado’s lawmakers saw a way to blend the Rocky Mountain State’s huge ski business with sports.
It took barely 30 days for a bill to permit sports betting to navigate its way to a Senate vote. Let’s take a look at how Colorado pushed sports betting legislation across the finish line, and who the most prominent players are in Colorado’s sports betting industry. Below we’re diving deeper into the timeline and betting history in the Rocky Mountain state.
Colorado Sports Betting Legal Timeline
Colorado’s lawmakers passed Proposition DD in 2019, and Colorado voters approved the bill in November. Regulations and oversight of Colorado’s sports betting was handed to the Colorado Division of Gaming.
Once the legal framework for how taxes would be applied to sportsbook operations and what the fees and tax rates on revenue would be, Colorado was ready to launch. The happy day for Colorado sports’ fans occurred on May 1, 2020.
The physical sportsbooks in Colorado’s legislation kept them concentrated in the two primary areas that housed the state’s casinos. With a partnership at a casino facility that earned approval to house a sportsbook, online sportsbook apps were also open to launch.
The revenue at the brick-and-mortar locations was drastically limited by the circumstances surrounding safe operations. However, the mobile apps started with modest revenues as well. Most of the reason was directly related to the limited number of active sports leagues.
Fewer games meant fewer betting options. However, as professional baseball and basketball kicked off shortened seasons, revenue for Colorado sports betting began to grow. In August, sports betting produced the best numbers yet.
After four full months of legal sports betting, Colorado was still falling short of expected revenue generation. The opening of the NFL season and the push for the MLB playoffs changed that. With one of the most enthusiastic professional team fan bases in the country, Denver Broncos fans were certainly helpful in this positive shift of good fortune.
Colorado Sports Betting History
Colorado’s efforts to bring sports betting to the Centennial State had bipartisan support in the legislature. Two Democrats and two Republicans sponsored Colorado HB 1327. The Bill was introduced in April 2019 and navigated its way through the general session with few problems.
The majority of the discussion was over the disbursement of revenues. Many states had automatically attached sports betting revenues to their state’s education fund. However, Colorado’s lawmakers felt it better to distribute much need monies elsewhere.
Most lawmakers, who held even modest reservations against sports betting, came on board when with the proposal to use a portion of sports betting revenue for creating a state water plan fund. After barely a month of discussion, HB 1327 was presented for a vote.
Support for sports betting in Colorado was overwhelming from elected officials. The bill passed the Colorado Senate by a 27 to 8 vote. The governor signed the bill one week after it was presented on his desk by legislators.
The next step in the process was Colorado voter approval. Ironically, this final and ultimately necessary step was harder than getting the bill through the senate and endorsed by the governor.
While there seemed to be an enormous amount of vocal support behind legalizing sports betting in the state, Colorado voters approved HB 1327 by less than a 3 percent margin. Regardless of the narrow victory of the bill, sports betting was now legal in Colorado.
Key points in the bill were immediately implemented. Regulations, tax rates and application requirements would be overseen by a newly created governing body. The Colorado Limited Gaming Commission (CLGC) was created as a sub-division of the Department of Revenue.
The CLGC would allow the approval of 33 sports betting master licenses to be restricted to Colorado’s three casino locations in Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. Through these approved brick-and-mortar locations, online sportsbook apps could partner and secure a license to provide online sports betting to Coloradans.
All total, there were six different classifications of sports betting licenses created by the CLGC. Two classes of vendor licenses have yet to become a factor, but the immediate addition of Internet Sports Betting Licenses was critical.

Only Indiana had a higher first-month handle at $35.2 million.
The launch also came in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, which affects the state more than anything. As live sports comeback and things return to normal over the next few years, Colorado could become a big sports betting hub among the states.
They already have a strong foundation as four sportsbooks opened for business on May 1, 2020. It is only a matter of time until more sports betting operators jump into the Mile High state and create an extensive sports betting business for Colorado.
