2025 Men’s Hot Dog Contest Odds & Patrick Bertoletti Interview: Will Joey Chestnut Reclaim Title? (July 4)
On Friday, July 4, Joey Chestnut will triumphantly return to Coney Island for the 2025 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut was infamously banned from last year’s competition due to a conflict with Impossible Foods, a plant-based hot dog company. One of the legends of competitive eating, the 41-year-old took home his first of 16 Nathan’s World Championship belts in 2007. Chestnut is heavily favored to do so again, but don’t count out Patrick Bertoletti. In this exclusive interview, the defending champ shares his perception of the betting odds for the hot dog contest, along with his mindset before going to war with Chestnut, among others.

How Bertoletti Put Himself On The Map
Forget about stuffing oneself with hot dogs within a 10-minute window. Sure, Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti first took part in the Nathan’s qualifiers 21 years ago, but there’s a story behind the man whose nickname stems from the city that inspired him and introduced him to deep-dish pizza, his earliest culinary obsession.
In 2007, the Chicago native launched a YouTube channel, quickly expanding his popularity. Three years later, he auditioned for “America’s Got Talent,” which consisted of asking the judges to help him crack 120 eggs before downing all of them in four pitchers. Needless to say, his raw-egg-eating record was enough for Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Melanie Brown, and Howie Mandel to give him the nod.
In 2011, Bertoletti polished off 275 pickled jalapenos in a mere eight minutes, yet another of his 35 world records. To prepare his stomach for the battle ahead, he consumed a bevy of dairy products, Pepto-Bismol, and Imodium tablets.
“It wasn’t pleasant after,” he said. “We’ll just say that. I don’t even like to eat spicy food.”

Bertoletti On Hot Dog Contest Odds
According to ESPN, a prize pool of around $40,000 is split between the men’s and women’s events. The winners will receive $10,000. Second place earns $5,000, and third place nets $2,500.
Despite ingesting a personal-best 58 hot dogs and buns in last year’s hot dog contest, DraftKings Sportsbook lists Bertoletti at +1000 odds of winning a second hefty paycheck outside the original Nathan’s location. By converting these betting odds to implied probability, he has a 9.1% chance of taking down Chestnut.
Bertoletti recalled that when he began his major-league eating journey, he was often left in awe of seeing his name on an odds board. These days, he doesn’t bat an eye. In fact, he agrees that he’s a longshot, considering he’s facing an all-time great feaster.
“Whatever the odds are of someone getting struck by lightning during the competition, those are my odds to win, I’d say,” Bertoletti said. “If that happens to Joey (Chestnut), I have a shot of winning this year.”
DraftKings even has markets for how many hot dogs each individual contestant will devour. Bertoletti’s total is pegged at over/under 53.5 after opening at 48.5. Much of this adjustment came on Wednesday evening. His odds to win the event, with and without Chestnut, also improved.
While Bertoletti doesn’t partake in sports betting, he noted his amazement at how often his final tally is neck-and-neck with the closing number. However, last year was a different story. Once he defied his +900 price tag, he received countless texts from friends who placed bets on him to eclipse his total of 45.5 hot dogs, which he scarfed down in convincing fashion.
“My co-workers said they won a lot of money, and while I was happy for them, I would’ve been equally horrified if they lost,” Bertoletti laughed. “For once, the oddsmakers were wrong.”
The men’s world record is 76 hot dogs and buns, set by Chestnut on July 4, 2021. Although Bertoletti is unlikely to come near this total, could he pull off the unthinkable again — this time with “Jaws” back in the mix?

Hot Dog Contest Odds: Bertoletti’s Game Plan
Similar to handicapping the NFL or MLB, well-informed bettors are aware of how the weather may impact the participants. Generally, Bertoletti and his fellow competitive eaters prefer cooler, less humid conditions, assisting with better digestion and piling up more hot dogs on their stat sheets.
Conversely, high humidity and heat could cause Bertoletti and Co. to work at a slower pace. At the moment, the forecast is in their favor, with temperatures hovering in the high 70s.
Nevertheless, Bertoletti stated that Chestnut has considered chewing the franks whole, rather than using the dip-and-go approach. This standard technique involves eating two plain hot dogs before dunking the buns in water, which expedites the chewing process and makes them easier to swallow.
The two often converse about strategy, as Bertoletti has known Chestnut for nearly his entire career. Admittedly, Bertoletti pondered shifting to a dryer method but opted to stay the course, given last year’s success and his imposing opponent.
“If I try to talk trash, he (Chestnut) doesn’t even respond, which is even more insulting,” Bertoletti said. “He’s like my older brother.”
Come Friday afternoon, bettors will find out if Bertoletti earns the last laugh — and a monstrous upset.
