The future is looking bright for sports betting in Kansas, and 2022 has seen some major steps towards full legalization. Both Missouri and Kansas got the ball rolling on legal sports betting in 2022, meaning both are likely to legalize sooner rather than later. It’s theorized that if one state legalizes online gambling before the other, bettors will cross state lines in order to place legal sports bets.

After being pulled by the House in order for more amendments, the sports wagering bill SB 84 was approved by the House on April 4th, 2022. The bill went on to receive Senate approval on April 29 where is it awaiting final confirmation by Governor Laura Kelly. This is likely to happen soon, as Ty Masterson, the Kansas Senate President, spoke with a radio show and expressed his confidence that the sports betting bill will likely get the green light. Before long, Kansas residents should be able to place a wide variety of sports bets, such as straight bets, parlay bets, futures bets, and much more.

Kansas Sportsbetting Timeline

In March, representatives began the discussion of a new sports betting bill that included elements of previously failed bills with several amendments to encourage the Senate and House to concur on a final version. Upon bringing it to the floor in late March, it passed and was sent to the House for approval. The House approved the bill almost immediately and sent it to the Senate on April 1 at which point the Senate did not take it up prior to adjourning for a three-week veto period, leaving the bill hanging until late April. At approximately 1:45 a.m. local time in Kansas, the Senate voted 21-13 in favor of the state’s sports betting bill that will legalize online and retail sports betting in Kansas. Now, the bill is awaiting Governor Laura Kelly’s signature, which is more than likely to happen given her public support of the bill over the course of legislation. When pen gets put to paper, it will still take several months for the market to be fully operational, but it is expected to be up and running by late 2022 or early 2023 at the latest.
