Michigan Wolverines 2026 College Football Preview, Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions
After a turbulent end to the year, it’s a new era in Michigan heading into 2026 with Kyle Whittingham taking the reins as the head coach of the Wolverines. A legendary coach in his tenure with Utah, Whittingham will attempt to bring some stability to the program after off the field issues derailed their progression. If Whittingham can unlock Bryce Underwood, then the Wolverines may round back into form quicker than anticipated.

Michigan Wolverines 2026 College Football National Championship Odds
National Title Odds:
Since their run to the National Championship, the Michigan Wolverines have fallen hard back down to reality, failing to make the playoffs the following two years. Their lack of production on offense held them back from being a well rounded contender, as well as off the field issues regarding their head coach. After Sherrone Moore’s dismissal, the Wolverines were quick to bring in an established name, poaching Kyle Whittingham after years of success with Utah.
With Whittingham leading the charge, the Wolverines can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they have a no-nonsense head coach whose sole focus is developing the program, giving them the stability they need to continue to attract recruits and make much needed additions in the transfer portal. Whittingham also managed to bring a majority of his staff with him, a group who turned the Utah Utes into a competitive team with far less resources at their disposal.
In order for Michigan to get back to National Championship contending form, Bryce Underwood must elevate his level of play under center. Underwood’s performance in 2025 was certainly alarming, finishing the year with just 11 passing touchdowns to his 9 interceptions. While most of the blame can be pointed towards his lack of coaching and anaemic scheme, Underwood’s spring training has shown little improvement, raising major red flags heading into 2026.
To make matters worse for Michigan, their schedule is as daunting as it gets, drawing the likes of Oklahoma, Indiana, Oregon, and Ohio State. Sprinkle in conference matchups against Iowa, Minnesota, and Penn State, and the Wolverines may find themselves quickly out of contention for the playoffs, especially if Underwood is unable to give them the spark they need to battle it out against top tier defenses.
While I do believe in Whittingham in the long run, his first year with the program presents far too many challenging opponents, making them a pass in the futures markets. Fortunately for us bettors, a second week matchup against Oklahoma will allow us to gauge their offense, giving us the opportunity to place a wager in the middle of the season if they exceed expectations and prove they can go toe-to-toe with the upper tier competition of their conference.

Michigan Wolverines 2026 Big Ten Championship Odds
Big Ten Title Odds:
As previously mentioned, the Wolverines schedule is as brutal as it can get, primarily in regard to their conference opponents. After hosting the Iowa Hawkeyes who are always a feisty opponent, the Wolverines turn around and hit the road to battle it out against Minnesota, a Golden Gophers team who mirrors their identity and possesses enough power in the trenches to disrupt their offense.
After their bye week, Michigan draws a tough stretch of games, hosting Penn State before a daunting matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers, two re-loaded contenders. The Wolverines then end their year playing Oregon and Ohio State on the road as sizable underdogs, most likely knocking them out of the picture with the Ducks and Buckeyes far more established on both sides of the ball.
Like our mentality for their National Championship futures, monitor Underwood’s development early on in the year before considering any type of long term investment. If Underwood can live up to his hype as the programs highest rated quarterback, then Michigan will be able to compete against the likes of Oregon and Ohio State, making them a buy to win the Big Ten during the regular season.

Michigan Wolverines 2026 Win Total Odds
Win Total Odds:
Even at 8.5, the under on Michigan’s win total is worth an investment. Underwood’s performance in spring training can not be overlooked as he failed to show any signs of improvement. Factor in the turbulence that comes from a schematic change, and the Wolverines slow start will hamper the development they need to compete when the quality of their opponent ramps up later in the year.
Bet: Yes – Under
Michigan Wolverines 2026 Heisman Contenders, Odds
Bryce Underwood, QB:
With question marks looming over the Wolverines offense, it’s tough to make a case for anyone to win the Heisman. Even at +3500, Underwood is a pass until he can work on his efficiency. While he is certainly capable of stuffing the stat sheet, his turnovers will hurt the Wolverines chances of winning, forcing the media to turn their attention elsewhere.
Moving down the oddsboard, JJ Buchanen is one of the few Wolverines skill players listed to win the Heisman, sitting at +30000. A former Ute, the newly acquired tight end will be Underwood’s safety valve when he is forced to scramble away from pressure, potentially leading to a very high usage rate to help build his case for winning the award. Still, even at his current odds, there are far too many question marks to justify a wager on the Wolverines tight end.
