We are nearing kickoff for Super Bowl LX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, which means it’s a perfect time to discuss one of the most popular wagers at online sportsbooks ahead of the big game: Super Bowl MVP.
While quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Drake Maye are the favorites and quarterbacks are much more likely to win the award, they’re priced up. The goal here is to find value in a pick that can bring you a greater return on investment, so we’re here to move down the odds board to analyze some potential Super Bowl MVP longshot picks.
Super Bowl MVP Odds for Seahawks vs. Patriots (Sunday, February 8)
When we take a look at the overall Super Bowl MVP odds, here’s what we see (courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook):
| Team | Position | Player | DraftKings Odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seattle | QB | Sam Darnold | +120 |
| New England | QB | Drake Maye | +235 |
| Seattle | WR | Jaxon Smith-Njigba | +550 |
| Seattle | RB | Kenneth Walker III | +650 |
| New England | RB | Rhamondre Stevenson | +2800 |
| Seattle | WR/KR | Rashid Shaheed | +3000 |
| New England | WR | Stefon Diggs | +5500 |
| New England | CB/PR | Marcus Jones | +6000 |
| Seattle | S | Nick Emmanwori | +7500 |
| New England | RB | TreyVeon Henderson | +7500 |
| Seattle | LB | Ernest Jones | +7500 |
As we mentioned, it should come as no surprise to see the quarterbacks at the top of the odds board, as QBs are the most likely to win. A signal-caller has won 11 of the last 15 Super Bowl MVP awards, after all. That said, there are some intriguing and valuable options as we scan down the list of names, which we’ll dig deeper into below.
Longshot Super Bowl MVP Picks & Odds
To narrow down the list of potential candidates, I’ve come up with a set of criteria for my selections:
- Seahawks player
- Non-quarterback
- Odds of +1000 or longer
The reason I’m focusing on Seahawks players is that I’m quite confident they’ll win this game, so narrowing it to one team narrows down the candidates for me. Super Bowl MVP odds are courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook as of Monday, February 2.
Super Bowl MVP Predictions: Rashid Shaheed (+3000)
Rashid Shaheed hasn’t played much of a role on offense since being traded to the Seahawks, but he’s a big-play threat who can take the top off an opposing defense at any time. We saw that in the NFC Championship, where Shaheed had a 51-yard reception. Shaheed can also make plays on special teams, featuring a kickoff return touchdown in the NFC Divisional Game. For this pick to hit, Shaheed would need to score a long touchdown and rack up yardage on kick returns.
Super Bowl MVP Odds: Ernest Jones IV (+7500)
Ernest Jones IV is a linebacker who made big plays for the Seahawks all year, including an impressive five interceptions, which led the team. We also saw him find the end zone. While this is a major long shot, we’ve seen a linebacker win the Super Bowl MVP in the past. It was Malcolm Smith back in Super Bowl XLVIII, when the Seahawks blew out the Broncos. If this one turns into a lopsided affair, Jones could be in play for this award, as long as he forces a turnover.
Longshot Super Bowl MVP Picks: Nick Emmanwori (+7500)
Nick Emmanwori is an impressive defensive back who has emerged as one of the stars on this defense in his rookie season. We haven’t seen a player in the secondary win Super Bowl MVP since Super Bowl XXXVII, when Buccaneers’ cornerback Dexter Jackson won the award after racking up two interceptions. If this turns into a low-scoring blowout and Emmanwori can rack up a sack and an interception, he’ll have a chance to win Super Bowl MVP.
Super Bowl MVP Long Shots: Coby Bryant (+15000)
Here we have a major long shot in safety Coby Bryant. But hear me out: this is a defensive back with a nose for the football. Bryant racked up four interceptions this season, which ranked second on the team, behind only Ernest Jones IV. What happens if the Seahawks win something like 27-13, with Bryant intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown? There would be a slight chance that he’d win Super Bowl MVP in that scenario, making him worth a dart throw here.
Super Bowl MVP Betting Tips
Here are some tips to consider in your Super Bowl MVP wagers:
- The last 22 Super Bowl MVPs have been awarded to either a quarterback (15), wide receiver (5), or linebacker (2).
- There hasn’t been a running back to win this award since Terrell Davis back in Super Bowl XXXII.
- Only one player from the losing team has won Super Bowl MVP: Cowboys’ linebacker Chuck Howley in Super Bowl V.
