2026 World Cup Group D Preview: Preview, Favorites & Qualification Scenarios
There’s not really a ‘Group of Death’ as such in this year’s World Cup, but Group D comes pretty close. We’re expecting a really tight Group D, all of the USA, Paraguay, Australia, and Turkiye will fancy their chances of finishing in the top two spots.
The first Group D game, USA vs Paraguay, will be a really interesting match-up. The USA has qualified as co-hosts, while Paraguay took the last automatic spot in the CONMEBOL qualification standings. A fantastic start to Group D, if either side can take the win it could go a long way in deciding who qualifies.
Turkey has the second-lowest odds to win Group D, and for us, any one of three teams can clinch the top spot. And while Australia has the weakest of the four squads, they still possess quality that can cause each opponent difficulty.
The final Group D games see the US take on Turkiye. For us, this game could decide who finishes in top spot and is one of the games during this World Cup’s Group Stage we’re looking forward to the most!

World Cup Group D Team Profiles
Read on for our Team Profiles of each country in Group D, where we’ve analysed and rated the chances of each side to progress to the Knockout Stages.
United States
Much is expected of this United States side in this year’s World Cup. As co-hosts, they’ll be playing in front of roaring home crowds, and this could spur them on to reach the Knockout Stages as they did in the 2022 edition. The USMNT has only reached the quarterfinal stage once, back in 2002, and it’s a tough ask to see them achieve that here, despite being on home soil.
However, we do expect them to finish in the top two positions. The all-important fixture against Turkiye could be the Group Winner decider in what is likely to be an incredibly close Group table.
- Key Players: Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie
Paraguay
Paraguay took the final automatic qualification spot in the CONMEBOL standings. They didn’t score a huge amount of goals during qualifying, with an average of less than a goal a game, but they also didn’t concede many either. In fact, only Ecuador, which qualified in second place, conceded fewer goals than Gustavo Alfaro’s men.
This is the first time since 2010 that Paraguay has qualified for the World Cup.
- Key Players: Julio Enciso, Diego Gomez
Turkiye
Despite losing just one of the UEFA Group E qualifying matches, Turkiye had to qualify for this year’s World Cup via the playoffs. They secured qualification with two 1-0 victories over Romania and Kosovo to reach their first World Cup tournament since 2002 and just the third they’ve appeared in in their history.
Despite their lack of World Cup pedigree, Turkiye are certainly capable of causing a stir in 2026. Their squad is full of talent, none more so than Real Madrid’s Arda Guler.
- Key Players: Arda Guler, Kenan Yildiz
Australia
As we touched upon earlier, Australia lacks the overall strength in depth that their Group D opponents possess. However, that isn’t to say they can’t make a push for the Knockout Stages. They easily qualified for this year’s tournament, losing just once during the AFC Qualifiers. Yes, they’ll be up against it, but it wouldn’t surprise us if Australia can get at least a win, which might be enough to progress in the third position.
This is the sixth consecutive World Cup tournament Australia has qualified for, and their seventh overall. They reached the Knockout Stages twice before, including in the 2022 edition.
- Key Players: Nestory Irankunda, Connor Metcalfe
Group D Winner Prediction: United States
Odds aren’t particularly favorable, but it’s really difficult to look past Switzerland winning Group B and easily at that. Canada, as co-hosts, will have the home fans on their side, but we still expect Switzerland to win all of their group games and head into the Knockout Stages comfortably.
Group D Prop Bet: Group Forecast USA 1st, Turkiye 2nd (+300 at bet365)
It’s a close call between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina in who will finish in second place, but for us, the co-hosts should do enough to progress as runners-up. Playing all three Group Stage games on home soil, we expect Canada to beat Qatar and do just enough to beat Bosnia, too.
