It’s a tough ask to get any PGA Tour player who doesn’t have to jockey for FedEx Cup points to show up during the Fall Series. That task becomes even loftier when introducing a relatively new event in the middle of Utah that lacks any historical significance.

That’s the cynical view. On the positive side, Black Desert Resort Golf Course is an enticing breath of fresh air within an otherwise repetitive collection of Fall Swing birdie-fest venues. Utah may not be a regular destination for most golfers, but its mountain scenery sets the stage for a picturesque viewing experience. Players will be treated well this week too, as they’ll enjoy the fruits of a brand-new, state-of-the-art resort venue.

Jackson Koivun figures to play a busy Fall Series schedule, seeking to solidify his current standing inside the top 70 of the FedEx Cup Standings. He’ll enter this week with sky-high confidence, fresh off an undefeated showing in his inaugural Presidents Cup appearance.

In addition to Koivun, Ben James, Maverick McNealy, Eric Cole, and Mchael Brennan figure to headline as the betting favorites this week. Other notables in the field this week include local Utahn, Tony Finau, as well as Nick Taylor, Jackson Suber, Max Homa, Davis Thompson, Ben Kohles, Denny McCarthy, and Billy Horschel.

Like other desert-style courses we’ve grown accustomed to seeing in the Scottsdale, Las Vegas, and Palm Springs regions, Black Desert Resort is a firm and fast course played at elevation, which will mitigate the advantage from pure bombers and with the constant threat of natural hazards neighboring each fairway. Instead, Black Desert Resort expects to favor top total drivers who can consistently find the fairway with driver in hand.

Opening in 2023, Black Desert Resort Golf Course is a brand new venue and the last of Tom Weiskopf’s famed career before his passing. Like Weiskopf’s other better-known designs – TPC Craig Ranch, TPC Scottsdale – Black Desert Resort is not overly demanding and opens the playing field for a majority of players who can consistently keep the ball in play off the tee to contend.

How It Breaks Down

Standing 7,421 as a par-71 with four par-3s and three par-5s, Black Desert Resort will actually play considerably shorter than the scorecard suggests after accounting for elevation. At about 3,000 feet above sea level, Black Desert Resort is not quite Castle Pines, but will still give an added boost to shorter hitters in the field. For that reason, I’ll give a slight edge to players who have proven to adjust well to controlling their yardages at altitude.

With only two tournaments under its belt as host of the Bank of Utah Championship, it remains to be seen exactly how Black Desert Resort will stand up against PGA Tour competition, but with the aid of extra carry distance at elevation and the absence of penal rough or complicated greenside complexes, I am expecting another birdie fest rewarding the hottest putters and wedge players. Even as a par-71, I would expect the winning score to come in beyond 20-under par this week.

Course History and Course Comps

With this week’s course having only just been established in 2023, we’ll need to lean primarily on presumed comp courses in lieu of statistically significant course history data. But for what it’s worth, the top 10 in total strokes gained at the Bank of Utah Championship over its first two years are Matt McCarty, Michael Brennan, Stephan Jaeger, Lucas Glover, Rico Hoey, Ben Silverman, David Ford, Max McGreevy, Max Homa, and Kristoffer Ventura.

Judging from the first two years of competition here, Black Desert Resort has played most similarly to TPC Summerlin. Host of the Shriners Children’s Open, TPC Summerlin has long rewarded the best total drivers, favoring accuracy over distance. Both courses feature the same Bentgrass base throughout and are played at elevations in similar firm and fast desert conditions. Tom Kim, Patrick Cantlay, and Sungjae Im have consistently played well at The Shriners, given their standout control off-the-tee and ability to catch a hot putter on Bentgrass. I expect a similar formula would set up well at Black Desert Resort.

After TPC Summerlin, I would next look at PGA West – namely the Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta CC – as a very strong course comp to Black Desert Resort. Host of The AmEx, PGA West is known to be one of the biggest birdie fests of the year, a credit to its negligible rough and straightforward greens complexes. Those who have found success at The AmEx should fare well for this style of desert golf.

Beyond these top comp courses, I’ll also reference performance at TPC Scottsdale, TPC Craig Ranch, and Torrey Pines (North) for the Tom Weiskopf connection, and The Summit Club, CC of Jackson, and Port Royal as easy scoring venues that reward a similar skillset.

Combine performance across this list, and the top-10 players in Comp Course History here are Tony Finau, Nick Taylor, Taylor Pendrith, Stephan Jaeger, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Maverick McNealy, Kevin Yu, Denny McCarthy, Michael Brennan, and Vince Whaley.

Player Spotlight: Ben James

It has been an exact science of rookies in excellent immediate form graduating from their pre-PGA Tour days and stepping up to the big stage here in Utah to announce themselves to the world. Matt McCarty and Michael Brennan each picked up their first career PGA Tour wins at the Bank of Utah Championship in its first two years, and while both were significant longshots and unproven professional talents, their dominance prior to making it to the Tour foreshadowed that they were names to watch.

James is far from an unproven talent and is likely to be a top-5 favorite this week. But with only nine career PGA Tour starts under his belt and a stellar collegiate career now behind him at the University of Virginia, he fits the mold of the young, burgeoning stars who have thrived on this stage before him.

James has had many close calls already in his first nine professional starts, finishing 2nd and 3rd in his last two starts, and picking up two additional top-15s over his last six. James is already an elite ball-striker, ranking top-10 in SG: APP, SG: OTT, and SG: Ball Striking over his last 16 rounds. He also happens to rank No. 1 overall in this field in SG: TOT over the last 36 rounds.

When I go to the bank, I’m looking to take out Benjamins. And when I go to the board at the Bank of Utah Championship, you can bet I’m betting Ben ‘BenJamin’ James. He should draw inspiration from Jackson Koivun’s performance at the Presidents Cup, and is on a trajectory to join him and represent the USA in future Presidents Cups himself, if he can keep up the pace he’s on now.

With all the course-fit profiles in mind, I’m leaning early toward the below player pool. Naturally, I’m looking their way in the 2026 Bank of Utah Championship odds as well. I’ve broken the list down by projected pricing/odds tier for DraftKings golf drafts.

Model Breakdown

In my model, I’m emphasizing SG: APP, Comp Course History, Birdies or Better Gained, and Prox: 125-200, followed by a more balanced mix of SG: OTT, SG: P (L36, Bent), Par-5 Scoring, and SG: TOT (L16).

Model Favorites

Michael Brennan won’t be sneaking up on anyone this time around. A full year since making his PGA Tour debut, Brennan is now a two-time PGA Tour winner looking to go back-to-back in Utah. Brennan won the Wyndham Championship just three starts ago, and stands atop my model thanks to top-5 ranks in SG: TOT, SG: OTT, and SG: Ball Striking over the last 36 rounds.

After Brennan, the rest of my model’s top 10 features Kevin Yu, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Doug Ghim, Billy Horschel, Maverick McNealy, Chris Kirk, Ben Kohles, Jackson Koivun, and Davis Thompson.

When Bank of Utah Championship odds open, I’ll be looking to construct a tighter card, with exposure to 1-2 of the top favorites. As of now, I’m eyeing Michael Brennan, Ben James, Kevin Yu, and Harry Hall as initial leans based on current odds.
