Italy gave the U.S. a run for its money on day three of the FIBA Women’s World Cup. The tournament favorites survived an abysmal shooting performance to move to 2-0. China escaped against Czechia in overtime while Australia and Belgium won their games to stay undefeated.

FIBA Women’s World Cup Day 3 Results
- Group C: Australia 87, Turkey 71
- Group D: China 74, Czechia 70 (OT)

Turkey led briefly in the first quarter before Australia pulled away for good, building a 40-30 halftime lead and cruising from there. Ezi Magbegor scored 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting, and Stephanie Talbot added 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Sevgi Uzun led Turkey with 24 points, 6 assists and 3 steals.
China trailed by 10 points in the second quarter, tied the game at 64 on a Yang Shuyu layup with 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, then outscored Czechia 10-6 in overtime to escape with a 74-70 win. Han Xu had 22 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists, and Yang added 18 points and 5 assists. Luo Xinyu scored two of her three-pointers during China’s decisive closing run. Eliska Joklova led Czechia with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
Belgium never trailed against Puerto Rico, building a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. Julie Allemand finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists without picking up a foul. Maxuella Lisowa Mbaka scored 16 points off the bench, and Julie Vanloo added 15. Imani McGee-Stafford led Puerto Rico with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
The USA held off Italy in its closest game of the tournament. Italy took the lead with 4:46 left in the fourth quarter and held it for a minute and a half before Breanna Stewart’s jumper put the USA back in front for good with 3:20 remaining. Jackie Young extended the lead to 53-50, and Chelsea Gray made it 55-50 before Matilde Villa’s basket closed the scoring at 55-52.
The Americans shot just 16 of 56 from the field (28.6%) and 1-of-12 three-pointers. Jackie Young led her team with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, Breanna Stewart had 11 rebounds to go with her 5 points. Cecilia Zandalasini led Italy with 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

Group C’s two unbeaten teams face off Monday, with the winner taking sole possession of first place. Puerto Rico and Turkey, both 0-2, play to avoid an 0-3 start. USA closes group play against Czechia, while Italy and China meet in a game that could decide both second and third place in Group D. Groups A and B return after a day off Sunday, with all four Group A teams sitting at 1-1 after two games.
Monday’s games will be spread across two venues as all four groups wrap up play in the group stage before the Final Phase which begins with the quarterfinals.
