Hungary and Germany earned places in the quarterfinals of the FIBA Women’s World Cup Tuesday on the first day of the qualification to quarterfinals round. Spain, France, Belgium and the United States already advanced to the quarterfinals by winning their groups in the group stage.

Qualification to quarterfinals

Hungary never trailed in an 84-63 win over Japan. Réka Lelik scored 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, adding 8 rebounds and 4 assists without a turnover. Virág Takács-Kiss added 17 points and 8 rebounds, and Ágnes Studer’s 3-pointer with 1 second left in the first half put Hungary up 37-34 after Japan had tied it at 34-34 on two Ramu Tokashiki free throws.
Hungary shot 11 of 25 from 3-point range and closed the game on an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter. Kokoro Tanaka led Japan with 11 points. Hungary advances to face the U.S. in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Germany routed Korea 94-56 with Marie Gülich leading her team with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in just 15:40 on the floor. Frieda Bühner added 17 points. Leonie Fiebich contributed 8 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks while Nyara Sabally added 10 points and 6 assists.
Germany’s bench outscored Korea’s entire team a whopping 59-3. Haeran Lee led Korea with 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Germany advances to face Belgium in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Group play delivered some record-breaking performances. Julie Allemand broke the career World Cup assist record in Belgium’s win over Australia with 111 after starting the tournament with 87. Japan set a tournament record for treys with 20 against Mali before France passed that mark three days later with 22 against Nigeria.
