Boston Celtics at Golden State Warriors Preview

In an interconference matchup that features two teams many before the season predicted might be in the 2019 NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics travel to Oakland for a matchup against the Golden State Warriors.

Golden State has been up and down lately, but they won their most recent game, giving them a 44-19 record on the season. They have a two-game lead on the Denver Nuggets for first place in the Western Conference and are 6-4 in their last 10 games. At this point, the Celtics seem like a lock for the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. They are 38-26, with a six-game cushion over the Detroit Pistons for fifth in the East, but are 2.5 games behind the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston lost their most recent game and are 3-7 in their last 10 games.

In their last matchup on January 26, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving battled it out with Durant and the Warriors getting the 115-111 win. KD had 33 points and Irving had 32 points and 10 assists. Boston will look to even the season series on the road tonight.

Celtics Analysis

Boston CelticsThe Boston Celtics were able to snap a four-game losing streak last Friday against the Washington Wizards but then got back into the loss column against the Houston Rockets on Sunday.

In their 104-115 loss to the Rockets, the Celtics had no answer for the Rockets, and specifically their small ball lineup that features James Harden, Chris Paul, and Eric Gordon. The trio combined for 89 points, 19 assists, and 16 rebounds.

Some of the cracks in Boston’s foundation are showing, and among their biggest issues is their bench, which you wouldn’t expect to be a problem with Jaylen Brown, Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier in the second unit. Against the Rockets, the five members of the bench that played combined for just 31 points, with Brown’s 15 accounting for most of the scoring. That’s especially an issue when two starters struggle on offense. Jayson Tatum managed only 12 points against Houston and Marcus Morris did not score in 18 minutes.

The Celtics do seem to finally be healthy though, so if they can get things going, they’ll have some depth for a playoff run.

Warriors Analysis

Golden State WarriorsThe Golden State Warriors needed a win on Saturday after dropping two games on their East Coast road trip to the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic.

Drawing the Philadelphia 76ers, even without Joel Embiid, was a tough challenge for the Warriors considering they were also without Klay Thompson. But they battled and used a third-quarter rally, outscoring the 76ers by 15 points, to get the win 120-117.

Kevin Durant led the Warriors with 34 points and Stephen Curry had 28 points. DeMarcus Cousins, who played 29 minutes, finished with 25 points and eight rebounds.

“With 20 games or 19 games left, this feel-good kind of games where you just figure out how to win is very kind of playoff-esque,” Kerr said after the game. “We want to build that kind of mentality and expectation down the stretch of the season.”

Klay Thompson is expected to return for tonight’s game.
