The New York Giants made their move at the quarterback position Sunday, acquiring former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. The trade, first reported by Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, addresses a quarterback room in New York that had been thrown into chaos over the past two weeks.

The Giants’ need became urgent after starter Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of their Week 2 game against the Rams. What initially looked like a manageable sprain turned out to be far more serious — Dart damaged both his MCL and PCL and required surgery to repair his meniscus, ending his season. Jameis Winston stepped in to replace him, but the results have been shaky since taking over. Winston has completed 48 of 93 passes for 678 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions, including an 11-of-27, 111-yard, one-interception line in relief of Dart in that same Rams game.
With Winston’s play lacking conviction, general manager Joe Schoen went looking for reinforcements, and McCarthy became available. The 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft and a national champion at Michigan, McCarthy had fallen to third string in Minnesota behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz, with the Vikings reportedly deciding he hadn’t shown enough promise to remain part of their long-term plans. Rather than let him keep riding the bench, Minnesota cut its losses for a late-round pick.
Betting Markets Adjusting New York Giants Odds
The NFL betting markets have already priced in just how much the Dart injury hurt New York’s outlook. Before Week 2, the Giants’ odds to make the playoffs sat at +165 and their season win total was 8.5. Since the injury, those numbers have cratered — playoff odds have ballooned out to roughly +550, and the win total has dropped into the 5.5-6.5 range. As of the McCarthy trade, oddsmakers still aren’t buying a turnaround: BetMGM currently lists the Giants at -475 to miss the playoffs entirely, with +360 odds to actually get in.
McCarthy won’t instantly erase those numbers, but he gives New York a younger, higher-upside option than Winston while Dart recovers. Whether he can move the needle enough to make this season’s playoff math interesting is the next storyline to watch in the Meadowlands.
