LeBron James Signing Vaults Philadelphia Up Betting Markets
When LeBron James is a free agent, it’s never a dull summer.
While not offering quite the same nail-biting anticipation of his prior dalliances with the open market, this year’s LeBron’s sweepstakes still naturally earned plenty of press.
And, it culminated with perhaps the most surprising outcome of all – the King bypassed two of the franchises he’s previously won titles with in his hometown Cavaliers and the Heat to sign a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option in Philadelphia.
The 76ers now boast a projected starting five of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron and Joel Embiid, a collection of talent that naturally prompts visions of a championship if good health prevails.
LeBron’s Arrival Defies Odds, Boosts Expectations
The Cavaliers and Heat had been considered the favorites to land the surefire Hall of Famer, and earlier this week, a Miami staffer had famously even posted a YouTube link to a hypothetical forthcoming LeBron introductory press conference.
The decision to head to Philadelphia, the team that typically sported the third-longest odds in LeBron Next Team betting markets, was therefore an upset with a solid payout for those who took a flyer.
From an on-court perspective, it also arguably pushes a team that finished last regular season with a 45-37 mark — and made it to the Eastern Conference semifinals before running out of gas against the Knicks — to a level on par with the defending champions and other upper-echelon squads.
Philadelphia’s odds of 50+ regular-season wins, a mark the Sixers last reached in the 2022-23 season, now sits at -125 on FanDuel Sportsbook. Meanwhile, Philly now checks in at +390 on the Eastern Conference Winner market, second only to New York’s +330 odds.
And, Nick Nurse’s crew has naturally also tunneled up the NBA Finals Winner leaderboard. The 76ers are now sporting +1000 odds to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy next June, slotting them fourth behind the Knicks (+900), the Spurs (+270) and the Thunder (+260).
Value, Risk Both Part of the Package
As mentioned earlier, the on-paper product that is the 76ers’ projected first unit is nothing if not enticing. With multiple future Hall of Famers, an experienced head coach and a roster that was already solid and battle-tested before the additions of LeBron and Brown, there’s no questioning the team’s ceiling.
However, there’s an argument to made the starting five could be rechristened the starting four-ish. Embiid isn’t realistically a full-time player any longer, and his notoriously deteriorating body has been largely responsible for the big man logging 39 or fewer games of regular-season service in each of the last three seasons.
Meanwhile, James himself is not close to the iron man he once was. LeBron played 60 regular-season games or fewer in four of his last six Lakers seasons and will turn 42 before the end of the calendar year. While his legendary conditioning and commitment to overall fitness has certainly helped him defy Father Time plenty, it remains to be seen how his body will hold up in his 24th season.
The NBA Finals Winner bet naturally offers the most appealing payout. However, the most prudent wager — one that still boasts a very appealing price — shapes up as the Eastern Conference Winner bet. The Knicks will be hard-pressed to repeat if they have any downturn in injury luck, while the Celtics’ swap of Brown for the player LeBron is essentially replacing, Paul George, is a very dubious one.
James’ old Cavaliers teammates will certainly present a formidable challenge. Yet, it wouldn’t surprise to see a player who’s always had a bit of a flair for the dramatic get to his 11th career NBA Finals by helping author a postseason ouster of his original team.
