Game Betting Analysis
It’s hard not to take the Over here, hitting in both of Virginia Tech’s home games this season to average an insane 70.5 points per game. The Over has also hit in three of the last four meetings, with the winning team scoring 38 points or more in those fames. Our set back is Pitt’s 1-3 O/U record, although they scored 59 and shutout Bucknell to see the Under 64 hit – so the 1-3 is a tad bit misleading. Pitt has put up 59 points twice this season with a live arm in quarterback Mason Heintschel, and the Panthers have actually gone Over in eight of nine games when playing as an underdog in October. Pittsburgh has also covered three of four meetings, along with seven of eight against the ACC – but the larger conviction still lies with the Over for us.

Deciding Factor: Pitt’s Record-Setting Passing Attack vs. Virginia Tech’s Leaky Secondary
This one comes down to whether Mason Heintschel can do to Virginia Tech’s defense what he’s already done to everyone else. Heintschel set an ACC record with seven touchdown passes against Miami (OH) and followed it up with six more in a 59-0 win over Bucknell, helping Pitt’s offense rank 5th in the FBS in passing yards per game at 347.3. He’s walking into the best possible matchup for it — Virginia Tech’s secondary ranks 84th nationally, allowing 7.4 yards per passing attempt. If Heintschel gets the same clean pockets and explosive plays through the air that he’s had all season, Pitt’s offense can put real pressure on a Hokies team that hasn’t been tested by an arm like this yet.
Virginia Tech’s counter is its red-zone machine, and it’s been perfect: the Hokies are first in the FBS in red-zone offense at 100% this season, operating behind new head coach James Franklin’s rebuilt roster. That’s a real problem for Pitt, whose defense is elite everywhere else — 3rd nationally in scoring defense at 8.5 points allowed per game, 4th against the run — but ranks just 58th in red-zone defense at 83.3%. Both teams are 4-0, and if this game turns into a track meet near the goal line, Virginia Tech’s finishing ability could be the thing that keeps them competitive with a defense that otherwise suffocates everyone it plays. The team that wins the red-zone battle — Pitt’s defense holding its one soft spot, or Virginia Tech cashing in its trips — is the team walking out of Lane Stadium undefeated.
