Survey Reveals Saddest Fans in the NFL
Every week can be a roller coaster of emotions for dedicated NFL fans. Of course, those who take home a ‘W’ are riding high on happiness, but what about the other fans? Those with their hopes crushed? We surveyed more than 2,000 NFL fans across the country to see which teams have the saddest fans and who is more likely to shed a tear.
When it comes to NFL Fans most likely to cry, the Dallas Cowboys take the number one spot. As the second most winningest team of all time and five-time Super Bowl champs, their fans are invested. Coming in second is the New England Patriots (could they still be shedding tears over Tom Brady and Gronk?) Rounding out the top three is the Green Bay Packers – and with seemingly constant drama surrounding QB 1 Aaron Rodgers, that isn’t hard to imagine.
When it comes to those least likely to cry, the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams take the top spots.
But what are the top reasons for the tears? 59% of respondents say losing a game starts the water works while 35% say losing THE game, the Super Bowl, is why they cry. On the flip side, some fans admit to happy tears with 36% crying over a Super Bowl win and 27% shedding tears over winning an important game.
Wins and losses aren’t the only reasons for weeping, 17% of fans say they’ve cried when their favorite player left the team and 15% cried after losing to a rival.
As we all know, alcohol can bring out true emotions – 15% of fans say they’ve cried while watching the game drunk.
When it comes to overall unhappiness, 42% of fans admit to turning off a game because they were too sad. Additionally, 1 in 3 fans also say they posted about their sadness on social media.
If you’re thinking these feelings are too weak for football, you may be wrong as 79% say it’s OK to cry over a team.
It may come as no surprise at all, the Detroit Lions ranked first for most miserable fans in the NFL, but hey, at least they secured a win in 2021!
Losing is clearly a source of misery with Cleveland Browns and New York Jets fans taking the #2 and #3 spots.
The least miserable fans are those cheering for the Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints.
Methodology
To determine our ranking, we surveyed 2,008 NFL fans across the country in November 2021 and asked them whether they’ve ever become emotionally upset while watching an NFL game. Respondents were also asked to rank the most miserable fan bases in the league. Among respondents, 50% were male and 50% were female with an average age of 37.
