The Super Smash Brothers franchise is perhaps my favorite video game franchise of all time. I’ve been playing the series ever since my brother and I got a GameCube with Super Smash Bros Melee when I was about four years old. I’ve played Melee, Brawl, and Ultimate and consider myself a pretty solid Smash player. However, when doing my research for this article, I soon learned that I am not as good as I thought. Competitive Super Smash Bros is one of the most popular forms of eSports in the world, and many talented players make up the competitive community. In this article, I’m going to be taking a look at the best competitors in Smash history, regardless of which game in the series they play.

1. Mew2King

Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman, also known by the abbreviated “M2K”, is a professional Smash player who has been competing in the competitive circuit since 2005. He has been ranked Top 5 in the world in nearly every Smash game, which is a testament to how good this guy is. He has competed in hundreds of tournaments in his career in every Smash game ever released, including Super Smash Bros for the 3DS, a game that isn’t as popular as its console counterparts. M2K has accumulated over $279,000 in his career from tournaments and is still competing at the highest level in the world to this day.

Gonzalo Barrios, better known by his gamer tag “ZeRo”, was perhaps the best Smash player in the world before his retirement only a few weeks ago. Using his mains of Diddy Kong and Sheik, ZeRo won an unprecedented 56 consecutive tournaments of Smash 4, a feat that may never be accomplished again. He has seen great success in other Smash games as well, most notably Brawl. ZeRo’s career earnings total to about $179,000. Although he has stated that he is done playing Smash competitively, ZeRo could come back, as this is something he has done before.

Adam “Armada” Lindgren is a professional Smash player from Sweden and is considered the best player in Europe. Armada began playing Smash in small tournaments in Europe before he finally made a name for himself in the competitive Smash community in 2007. He placed 4th at a national competition in Sweden and began getting invited to big Smash tournaments across the world. His best years came in 2011 and 2012 when he won both the Melee singles and doubles tournaments (alongside Mew2King) at Apex, one of the biggest annual Smash tournaments in the world. Today, he is a semi-retired Melee player and still competes in Ultimate tournaments. Armada’s total career winnings eclipse over $300,000.

4. Hungrybox

Juan Manuel DeBiedma, better known as “Hungrybox”, is a competitive Smash player best known for using Jigglypuff. He is considered the best Jigglypuff player in the world and has competed in tournaments for every Smash game using the character. His unique defensive style of play with the character increased Jigglypuff’s tier ranking and made the character more respectable in the competitive community. Hungrybox competes professionally in every Smash game except Brawl, in which he is retired. He has made roughly $340,000 in his career using the puffy, psychic Pokémon.

He began traveling to the United States to compete in tournaments in 2016 and quickly became one of the best in the game. However, his best gameplay was still yet to come. Today, he is the top-ranked Smash Ultimate player in the world, most often using Joker in competitive tournaments. His calculated and aggressive style of play has helped him reach the Smash world’s peak and made him over $200,000 richer from winning tournaments.

Joel Alvarado, better known by his competitive name Isai, is considered by many to be the greatest Smash 64 player ever. When it comes to this version of Smash, Isai is virtually unmatched in skill. He has won dozens of tournaments in his career using his mains of Pikachu, Fox, and Jigglypuff. Isai even traveled to Japan in 2006 to play some of the top competition in that country. However, his skill level was unmatched by his Japanese challengers. Isai also played Melee professionally until he retired from the sport in 2007.

In 2015, he ended ZeRo’s 56 tournament win streak by defeating him twice at the MLG World Finals in perhaps one of the most stunning upsets in Smash history. He has made over $122,000 in his career and will continue to be one of the best in the game for a long time, as he is only 23 years old.

Joseph Manuel Marquez, known by his gamer tag “Mango”, is a professional Smash player whose best game is easily Melee. He made a name for himself in 2007-2009, playing as Jigglypuff in Melee. Mango played a massive role in upgrading the character’s status on the Melee tier list. He is also regarded as perhaps the greatest Falco Melee player of all time. Mango was placed first at some of the biggest tournaments in the world and has made over $177,000 in his career.

Ken Hoang is one of the first pro smashers that broke out on the scene when he began playing the original Smash on the Nintendo 64. He was one of the most dominant Melee players in the world from 2003-2007 before taking a five-year hiatus from competition. Kevin Nanney, known as PPMD in the competitive Smash community, is one of the “Five Gods” of Melee and is considered a legend of the sport. His most notable tournament win was when he defeated Armada in the 2015 Apex Finals, using only Marth for its entirety. Although he is currently no longer competing in the top tournaments, PPMD has said that he would like to return to be a spectator/commentator at these events. His career earnings total just over $37,000.
