Chicago’s win came from an all-hands pitching plan: Hagen Smith opened with three scoreless innings before Grant Taylor took over and recorded the final seven outs, including a full-count curveball to strike out Yainer Diaz with the bases loaded in the eighth. The offense did the rest early — every starter reached base, the Sox out-hit Houston 11-6, and a 432-foot solo homer from Colson Montgomery (a much-needed spark after a rough season) plus Sam Antonacci’s two-run single, set up when Kyle Teel’s single and a hit-by-pitch on Montgomery loaded the bases, built a 5-0 cushion before the Astros ever got going.
Houston’s problems started on the mound: starter AJ Blubaugh lasted just 27 pitches, walking three and allowing a run before getting pulled in the first. Nelson Velazquez’s two-run pinch-hit homer over the Crawford Boxes briefly made it interesting, but a Chicago run on a wild pitch in the seventh sealed the 6-3 final. Now down 0-1 in a best-of-three at home, the Astros need a real start out of their rotation, while the White Sox — winners of their first road playoff game since 2020 — showed they’re comfortable riding the same bullpen-first formula again in Game 2.
