D.C. Sports Betting Sees Big September Jump: $20.7M Wagered

Now that we’re getting ready to kick off Week 7 in the NFL, it’s pretty easy to forget just how popular those first few weeks are. The buildup to the first week alone was something for the ages, with tons of media speculation for the season and, as you’d expect, tons of betting advertisements. This excitement has tapered a bit in the previous weeks, as seen with the decrease in sports betting ads paired with the start of the MLB playoffs, along with the NHL and NBA officially starting their seasons. Still, that was a successful first month of the NFL season, especially in the sports betting world. Let’s crunch the numbers on the first month of the NFL season and check in on one area that performed exceptionally well.

Washington D.C. Sports Betting Skyrockets

It’s just been revealed that the entire sports betting handle for the area was $20.7 million for the month of September. This is a 66.4% jump from the month ago, when the D.C. betting handle only hit $12.4 million.

GambetDC, a sports betting app in the area, was responsible for $3.7 million of the month’s total handle. However, that’s a far cry from the competition, as Caesars Sportsbook and BetMGM combined for a total of $17 million in September.

Football For the Win

The reason for this major jump in numbers? Football, of course. September brings both pro and college football action, and bettors took full advantage. New Jersey just reported an incredible $1 billion handle last month. This number shattered the previous record in one month of $996.3 million from the previous year, also set by New Jersey. With these numbers on the grow, it wouldn’t be too shocking to see another $1 billion month from a state in the near future.

Plenty of other states saw record-breaking Septembers as well. Michigan, Iowa, and Indiana all saw major handles in September, with Michigan alone seeing a $386.3 million handle last month. Now that the NHL season is underway and the NBA has tipped off, we’re still set to see some big handles as the year goes on.

State of D.C. Sports

If you live in the Washington, D.C. area, you’ve got no shortage of teams to root for. The Washington Football Team might be 2-4, but they’re hoping for a turnaround in this long NFL season. Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals are off to a 3-0-1 start, coming off a 4-1 win against the New Jersey Devils. The Washington Wizards, meanwhile, started off the NBA season strong with a 98-83 steamrolling of the Toronto Raptors. The Washington Nationals are looking to put their 2021 65-97 season behind them as quickly as possible as they look forward to 2022. With some great games to look forward to in D.C., it’s an ideal time to be a sports bettor in the area.
